This is a Striped hoverfly, Helophilus pendulus, (Thanks Thijs and Dietrich for the I.D!) which I photographed down at my local lake.

I hope you like it!

Striped Hoverfly - Helophilus pendulus

Also known as the sun fly, as it does not appear until the sun is shining, this fly has yellow and black markings. It is a common and widespread hoverfly and the adults may be found in numbers around muddy puddles, ditches and the shallow margins of ponds.

It is a notable wanderer and can be found well away from water. The larva is a rat-tailed maggot with a long and telescopically extensible breathing tube which enables it to breathe, whilst submerged, in farmyard drains, very wet manure and very wet, old sawdust. The flight period is between April and October.

Adults visit many garden plants. The larvae feed on detritus.

Guelder rose, Meadowsweet, Michaelmas daisy, Ox-eye daisy, Poached-egg flower, Viper's-bugloss

Hi Joe. I have to say this is about as good as it gets in macro pictures. first the POV lets us see the whole of the body with fine detail and your sharp focusing. Your use of the flash has given a shine to the wings and bright colours. well taken TFS.

Very fine closeup with good many details. tfs.

Hi Joe,
nice, you used the flash to good steed. It must have been a ring oder other macro flash. That way the glare on the wings was subdued.
Thijs (pentaxfriend) already told us (and I confirm it after consulting an ID book) that this fly is not a Marmalade hoverfly, but a male Helophilus pendulus, Striped hoverfly, ("Gemeine Sumpfschwebfliege" in German). Since TN mounts can be traced with Google it is useful to have the right keywords attached to them. I hope you don't mind this little carping of mine :-) I know that your are'nt an entomologist (and mistakes happen to entomologists like me as well).
Best regards

Amazing details - as always a wonderful macro! The lighting is gorgeous.

Hi Joe

Another excellent macro. Great symetrical composition with superb sharpness and details. Good DOF and OOF background too.
