OK - carrying on from yesterday's Orchids in Snow taken on Sunday after the (rare) snow is today's 'Crab Apple Blossom in Snow' (Malus sylvestris (?)).

It grows deep within our woodland, almost squashed by a falling Goat Willow tree.

It was seeded naturally, probably from the huge Malus sylvestris tree's on the Nature Reserve that our house backs onto. (As an aside, they are quite useful for pollinating my own apple trees which were planted after this specimen was found, all are within 500m of my garden.)

So we are deep within deciduous woodland, actually not far (25m) from the Early Purple Orchids from yesterdays post. Because there was so much snow, I have actually had to kneel on the ground and look up at the branches, otherwise I may as well have photographed the lawn under 15cm or more of snow. You could not see the blooms. (I also had to use this method to photograph the gorse which was bent double with the weight of snow.)

Taken with the macro lens, (it was snowing too hard to even consider changing to my preferred lens (preferred because I know it better and can handhold it better). IS0400 because of the poor light with fill-in flash. I was also having to constantly wipe snow off the lens glass as well with an ever increasingly wet lens cloth!

Taken in RAW, overexposing at the time by +1/3EV to compensate for the faulty light reading snow can give, converted to JPEG, cropped slightly (to hide the bank of snow which was the top of another snow covered branch), no increase in saturation or contrast, resized, USM and a border added.

Hi Emma
Very interesting presentation. Great moment Nice contrast vivid pink and delicate white snow.

What an ironic development, Emma!
The Crab Apple tree has already declared spring, but the winter does have to barge in to make its presence felt.
In this very pleasant looking image, the colours of the flowers are beautifully contrasted with the white snow.
Thanks for sharing this image and take care.

Hi Emma,
Nice pastel colors of pink and green, and good control of the light on the snow. You managed to present a bright and clear image with ISO 400. And what a story ! Hope you'll still have some apples in your garden with this late snow.

You will have a whole postcard set of these made up. Too nice just to post here...good enough to put on some nice writing cards....I wonder how many people actually write any longer. I noticed my handwriting has gone down since the computer advent.

Hello Emma,
How are you! delighted to see your beautiful posting once again!
lovely image with green and flowers on white snow with great details
many thanks for the sharing
best regards

Really like the snow covered blossoms here Emma, a fine image..
I enjoyed your last post also. Glad that you're feeling better.
But take care now - No more laying on that cold ground just to get the shot OK :)

Hallo Emma
I have heard a lot about you and just the other day Loot mentioned he wonder how you are and yesterday I critiqued a photo that Claudine has dedicated to you a while ago.
While being away for Loot and my wedding anniversary I missed out on plenty lovely photos. I am now trying to catch up when I have the time and came across this beauty of yours.
Your image of the Crab Apple Blossom in the snow is just great. I like the originality of the presentation. One cannot think that something so plain and simple can turn out in such a peace of art. This I consider a PPPP Pretty, perfect, picture, photo. The kind you would like to frame and hang on your wall. I personnally think this would look perfect against a kitchen wall.
There is such a lot of detail in this photo to appreciate. A well presented image with all the right focus, sharpness and point of view. It's a beautiful image which I enjoyed looking at. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your day.
Kind regards

Hi Emma,
I missed many of your last posts and my attention was attired to this so special one. It's not every day that we can see flourishing flower under the snow! This is an excellent contrast, most interesting and well realized picture. Thanks!

Hi Emma.
I regret that I have missed this charming picture. Fantastic scene and so amazing realization of your creative idea. Impressive combination of coldness and life, strong white tones and vivid colours of the leaves and buds. Technically shot is so outstanding as esthetically. Bravo.

Nice image, Emma. I think the color/white juxtaposition that reflects the spring/winter one. Great details here that really give this image a "snap!"
