This was taken at the british wildlife centre in Surrey at the end of last year. As you can see by the piece of wood the stoat is standing on, it was a bitterly cold day. The sun didn't reach the stoats until the afternoon leaving the grass and wood covered in frost. This stoat appeared for just a few minutes and climbed to his highest lookout point. The dark background is just a green wall thrown into shade.

I thought I would post this as it illustrates the stoats body shape.
Mustela nivalis
or Mustela erminea?

Stoats and weasels are oftern confused as in photos the look similar.

One of the differences is size .Weasels have a body length of around 8 inches or so,with a tail around 3inches or less, Stoats are slightly larger with a body length of up to 12 inches and a tail length of up to 4inches or more.

The easiest way to tell the difference between the two is the tail. Stoats hve a black tip to the tail.

In cold winters the stoats coat can turn white (ermine) although the tail retains the black tip. Weasels do not change colour.

Hello Karan,
You have saved a beauty to us. What a fantastic photo! The colours are amazing with a perfect contrast against the dark BG. Great sharp details and a very good composition. Wonderful catchlight in the eye.

Your full side view does give it good id purpose and colours true. I can see bits and pieces of other animals in it as well. This is a first for me...but it certainly appears a cousin to more than one..The colours popped up well with convenient wall Karan! Nice image!

Nice shot Karan with this black BG almost like in a photographer's studio!
Many details on the animal and the wood, nice posture

Really nice on a black background, nice capture.

Hi Karan,
Very nice capture.Looks like a studio work.Lighting, dark BG,details, sharpness and clarity is wonderful.
Thanks for posting.

This is great Karan. It hardly looks real. Are you sure he isn't stuffed in some natural history museum, posed perfectly on an attractive frosty log with a nice dark background to set him off from any distracting detail? hmmm. : ) Wonderful work. He is perfectly exposed and sharp. It could be a textbook image.... There's an idea. Sell it!!

Hi Karan.
Can be anything better? I think no. Simply amazing subject, fantastic beautifulness of the animal and its charming profile as well as very impressive "stage". Contrast between well illuminated scene and dark BG is amazing too. My congratulations and best wishes.

Hi Hester,
One of those animals that i have not seen in real. I like the curious searching look on its face. Wonderful sharpness, colours and DoF.
The work is perfect in many ways and I would love to add this one to my "Unforgettable" theme.
TFS & Cheers

A fine capture Karan, executed as perfectly as a carefully planned studio shot. The dark BG here enhances the natural beauty of this agile mammal quite nicely. TFS indeed!
Ooops, sorry, just run out of smileys...

Gran plasticidad en esta bella imagen Karan. Un ejemplo de buen encuadre. Preciosos colores y un fondo muy acertado. Preciosa.

Hi Karan,
Excellent capture of Stoat; great pose and composition, sharp fine details, nice warm colours. These are very difficult to photograph, from the past few years I have one close result of two of these: I would not recognise the brown mess unless I knew.

Hello Karan

A very informative post with excellent notes.
The image is first rate.
Excellent pose and POV,the focus is sharp with wonderful detail.
The lighting is well managed and the dark BG makes a terrific back drop.
The frost on the log is impressive.
Great job.

Hi Karan,
Without reading your note, the first thing that came to my mind; Should he be white? But it seems that they don't need to be. What ever color, it certainly posed for you in its most beautiful pose and stood on a wonderful podium. I love the side profile and love that you got such a wonderful dark BG to work with.

Hi Karan ,
Great shot.
BG is excellent and details is great too.

Well captured

Hi Karan,
a very good shot of this Weasel.
Superb composition.
Excellent clarity.
Great light.

Much better than I got of this fellow :-)

Very well done,

Hello Karan,
Very well composed photograph of stoat with great details of it's side profile. The sharpness & lighting is perfect. TFS.

They don't get much crisper than this. Great detail, and you did well to capture this position. I can't believe how close you got. I've got a couple of stoat pictures, taken at 400mm, but they occupy far less space than yours in the frame. Well done!

Hi Karan,
That green wall gave you a very good looking dark bg. The whiskers are looking great against it. Very good focus and sharpness. Also nice detail is the frost on the wood.
