this was taken on the Water of Leith Walk that takes you right through the centre of Edinburgh, Scotland. Its amazing to think that the herons live and breed quite happily in the city.

Hello Fiona,
Greetings and welcome to TN. A very artistic approach here. I'm guessing with f/5.6 that the lack of light led you to the slow shutter speed, in which case good thinking and a great result. The movement portrayed is excellent, a good bit of panning. Very good colours and the crop/composition works very well, exposure is just about right I think. My initial thought was that the top should be cropped but the more I look the more I think it's better as it is. The Heron is pretty much placed on the thirds so you've obviously thought about it from that perspective. The only distraction is the white blob behind the Heron's wing but nothing you could do about that. Very nice image.

i like these shots of flying birds with a nice motion blur. this one has a perfect compo and a nice mixture of sharpness on the head and motion blur all around
