After leaving Rannoch Moor, I set off down into Glen Etive. A 14 mile single track road descends into the Glen and towards the sea loch, Loch Etive. The road only actually makes it to the head of the loch with the loch being another 20 miles long itself.

The loch cuts in from the coast into the heart of the mountains leaving some very steep slopes in and out of the loch area and some huge rocky ravines when in the winter months significant volumes of water race off the mountains. I have crossed on foot over some of these rocky areas and the scale of them is very humbling. It is also very hard to picture where all that water comes from!

Some info on Loch Etive taken from Wikipedia.
Loch Etive (Scottish Gaelic, Loch Eite) is a 30 km sea loch in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It reaches the sea at Connel, 5 km north of Oban.
The name Etive is believed to mean little ugly one from the Gaelic Goddess associated with the loch... The loch, being higher than sea level, together with its narrow mouth, results in its most unusual feature, the Falls of Lora. Part of the north bank has been designated a Special Area of Conservation in particular due to old sessile oak woods. Surprisingly, a small colony of around 20 common seals is resident in Loch Etive.

The structure you can see in the sea loch is an old wooden ruined pier. There is also an old stone (again ruined) building hidden in the shadows to the right which is the cause of the straight line refelction in the water on the right.

Shortly after my arrival a breeze got up and I lost the wonderful calmness of the water. There is also a fallen branch in the water and the low exposed some seaweed as well.

The picture is in colour, but the strong sunlight and the browns from the bracken and dead grasses from the mountainsides created a very sepia colour quality to the scene.

I have converetd the picture from RAW, dropped the exposure a touch more (it was taken with -1EV and a 0.9nd Hard edge graduated ND filter as it was) amnd cropped off the overexposed top half of the image. Otherwise it is untouched other than the usual resize and Un-sharp mask.

Hi again, Emma

Another fantastic shot from you!
At first i thought you took this in sepia yourself, but reading that it was the natural look, makes it even more interestng and beautiful.
The mood here is just outstanding and the composition is charming!
The soft waves on the water are a brilliant touch and the faded slopes on the left give a great pespective and depth to the overall picture.
Great work!

Bravo and TFS

Hello Emma,
It is a wonderful atmosphere captured!
I like the mix of pin sharp details and the softer background...
The composition is professional and the tonal range shows a photographer who know more than pressing the shutter!

Hi Emma,
Calm, cold, impressive, beautiful place. Light, colours, composition,... all lead to the adjectives I used to describe the effect of this image on me.
TFS, José M.

Hi Emma,
This is just plainly awesome. I can't think of anything else then that. The tranquil feel this photo has is just perfect. Just by looking at it makes me all relaxed. The effect of the natural desaturation by the sun is perfect. What really strikes me most is the leadline of the reflection of the mountain that leads me to the man made structure. It is full prove of a perfect composition. Excellent work, really excellent work.

That just looks so serene and beautiful. Lovely composition

It sure does look sepia colored. It's hard to believe it is in color. You managed a strong composition with a great range of values. I like it a lot.

Hi Emma,
This is a beautiful mood with the layers and a perfect control of the light conditions.
I like the contrast of the dark pier with the sun rays.
Very well done and TFS

Just unbelievable! That sepia is also a colour of nature is proved here in this magnificent landscape from Scotland, Emma.
What fantastic layers of contrasting zones on both water and land created by the light! They leave me speechless with amazement.
I also enjoyed reading your informative note.
Best regards,

when i saw a comforting tune came into my head from my scottish boyhood..cant remember the name but your shot is pretty evocative in that respect. its the peace and serenity which did it..

Hi Emma,
A very beautiful and moody feel to this landscape. I really like your choice of composition and panoramic crop and framing here. It says color, but it seems B&W with very mild sepia in tones. AWESOME!

Well taken and presented. We can enjoy the view while traveling along side you, excellent presentation.

Belle ambiance et le traitement d'image va bien.
Bonne journée.

hello emma!
very beautiful and mighty picture!
great work!

Oh wow Emma this is top class.

Sorry I missed this! It really is superb.

A very silky smooth image and a mellow atmosphere. You have chosen the perfect spot to photograph from and the composition of this is excellent. The light breaking through is wonderful and the gentle ripples of water which the wind has caused really add to the shot though you might have curse it at the time!

You certainly have an eye for a photo Emma, congratulations on nailing this one. I think the sepia tones have really done justice to the shot.

Well done,

What a peaceful scenery Emma. I love those tones of colors, like you said it looks almost as it was in B&W. Those rays of lights create a beautiful effect with excellent contrast and exposure. This is superb! Thanks,

Oh wow, such a powerful photo this is. the black and white is a great idea, love the shot. Well done. TFS

An excellent photo, only the two colors- black and the background finish the photo very well.
