[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I took this shot when the wind was blustery and howling in Hyde Park. Regular short rain showers and changing light. I have a new Canon lens 70-300 IS USM. I find it hard to use as it is much heavier than my previous lens. However, I am finding that if I am well focused it does deliver a good result. I am doing a lot of close ups as a result in testing the lens.

This Swan was in prime condition, I would say about 2 years old.(You can usually tell by the condition of the beak and the lightness of feathers on the neck) As you know Swans mate for life and there are quite a few of lone young swans. in Hyde Park, who have not yet found a mate.

Mute swan
Cygnus olor
The mute swan is a very large white waterbird. It has a long S-shaped neck, and an orange bill with black at the base of it. Flies with its neck extended and regular slow wingbeats. The population in the UK has increased recently, perhaps due to better protection of this species. The problem of lead poisoning on lowland rivers has also largely been solved by a ban on the sale of lead fishing weights. Some birds stay in their territories all year, while others move short distances and form winter flocks. In cold weather, some birds arrive from Europe into eastern England.

Where does it live?
Found in lakes with shallow areas for feeding, slow-flowing rivers, canals, nearby fields and beside salt and brackish water.
As for breeding, but also on sheltered coasts and estuaries.
Where to see it
Breeds across most of the UK, other than in northern Scotland, mid-Wales and the moors of south-west England. Possible to see anywhere there is a shallow lake, or a slow-flowing rivers, even in urban areas and parks.
What does it eat?
Water plants, insects and snails.
What does it sound like?
Mostly silent, but hisses when angry; in flight its wings make a loud throbbing ‘waou, waou....'.
When to see it
All year round
Similar species
Bewick's swan, Whooper swan
Ouse Washes
Rockland Marshes

Hi Deborah,
Love it! The new lens looks good. Excellent sharp and clear detail, perfect exposure, no blown highlights and detail in all but the darkest areas. I really like the composition here, quite unusual but creative, the head and eye are well balanced in the frame. Nice capture of the water droplets too and of course the eye contact. All in all a great shot, good camera work.

Outstanding sharpness, you really got close. You mention that the ban on lead weights has solved the problem of lead poisoning, but I thought that problem would take many years to resolve, as those lead weights will remain for many years. Or do lead weights sink into the mud, and become inaccessible within a year or so?

Hi Deborah, this is incredible detail on this swan. You've caught the catch light with the swan looking at you and I love the way the water is running off the bill.

Thanks, John

nice action with the water droplets, good focus and nice expression on the bird good colors too

Very good close up with artistic tuch.
Nice pose details and colors.
Yes, this lens are heavy. I felt the same when I switched from Panasonic FZ30 to Canon + 100-400 L.
Regards, Mario.

About yur lens, it's a very good lens with great sharpenss
and a good third generation of IS, I have own one and I liked it a lot. And it's not that heavy if you consider the range, 70-300 and vith IS. You can try to use a monopd.
Well done.

Hi Deborah

Congrats and a great shot. Nothing wrong with your timing! :-)

Hello Deborah,
At 1/1600, you have created a fantstic effect by capturing the water drops trickling off the swan's beak.
The close-up image of the face is very sharp, clear and colourful.
Well done and TFS.

Very nice detail Deborah. Very well done. tfs. Stev

WOW, now that is truely an awesome photo. Low POV, DOF, colors, Shrpness, pose, everything about this photo is awesome. I love the low POV of this shot the best. This photo should be printed and hanging on somones wall. :)

This is one of the most interesting compositions of a swan I have seen. The drip exposure is right on.Lighting and crop do wonders for it.
So glad you made a comment on one of mine, because that allowed me to see your images faster than I may have by random.
