[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
two views of the same bee-fly on a grape hyacinth, I had'nt a clue what this was till I saw a posting recently, I almost mistook him for a bee until I saw its long prooscis and bold brown wing pattern, which you can see to the left.
The bombylius major is a harmless furry fly that is good at hovering and clings to the flower with its slender legs when feeding. so bee like it drops its eggs into the nests of other solitary bees and wasps.
I was lucky to get several quick shots but none realy sharp with a hand held tele, as it darts rapidly from flower to flower.
