[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the first new offspring I have seen in my local park this year. This chick, being the only one, was with its mother.The official population count of the Red Crested Pochard in the UK is onley around 100, so they may only raise one chick a year.

Red Crested Pochard (Netta rufina)
Overview
Larger than a pochard, the male has an orange-brown head with a red beak and pale flanks. Females are brown with pale cheeks. In flight they show whitish primaries. They dive, dabble and up-end for their food. There is a large population in Spain and nearer but smaller numbers in France, Netherlands and Germany - and occasional wild birds may come to the UK from the Continent. The UK breeding birds almost certainly all come from escaped birds.

Where to see them
Found mainly in southern and eastern England, where breeding populations have become established following excapes from captivity. Occasional wild birds may occur in places like Abberton Reservoir, Essex.

What they eat
Stems, roots and seeds of aquatic vegetation.

Hi Debz,
Nature is ahead with 3 – 4 weeks in UK compared with Canada.
In my local Park there are a Canada Goose on nest for the last 6-7 days. I’m worry about it: is 3 ft from the trail.
Your picture is very good and interesting (as usual) and is of rare bird too.

I like this, the lighting is good, bringing the detail out whilst adding that catchlight in the eye. The ripples also add to this...

Hi Deborah,
This is a chick I have not seen before. Bags of definition, sharpness good, over use of burn tool, with too small a brush size, on chest spoils it somewhat. Use 6 or 7% on Highlights and a brush size about 250. Stop when the burned out bit has just gone.
