This was one of my first photos of a dragonfly.
This particular one is a Black-tailed Skimmer.
The Black-tailed Skimmer, Orthetrum cancellatum, is a European dragonfly.

The male has a blue abdomen with a black tip and transparent wings, and the female has a yellowish brown body with black zigzag marks along the abdomen and the transparent wings.

This species has expanded its range, assisted by the creation of gravel pits which give it the extensive open unvegetated areas it prefers. It was first recorded in Great Britain in Essex in 1934.

Hi Joe

A great shot especially if it is your first. Good focus and colours.

I have a dyke - the Forty Foot - at the bottom of my garden and frequently get big dragon flies - it is OK until one flies into the house or office, then you realise how big - and fast they are!

Hi Joey, Congratulations on your first dragonfly! sorry to disappoint you but this isn't a club tailed dragonfly. The Club tailed dragonfly (Gomphus vulgatissimus)has eyes that do not meet at the top. This looks like a sympetrum sp. of some sort although I'd need to have my books to id.

How lucky are you, I still doesn't have an insect like this on my gallery!
It's quite impressive the appearence of the face, being so close.
I found the focus is a little soft, but otherwise the colour harmony of the image is very good.

Hi Joe,
for a first DF is nice with good POV and well composed.
The details are a bit soft, it's not easy in macros,
both with shallow DOF and that you use a quite long SS 1/15,
a support will help you next time.
Waiting for the next one.

Well...It certainly didn't take long for folks to know a good shot when they see one. The most amazing depth of field and focus...and unusual in some sort of way. This is a remarkable shot and one for my scrapbook.

Have to agree with Paul that this is definitely not a Clubtail. Maybe a Golden Ringed Dragonfly, Cordulegaster boltoni ? Same sort of basic colouration and on the Golden Ringed Dragonlfly the eyes meet at the top.

Have a look at the two on Google Images and see what you think Joey, as it's hard to judge what the rest looks like with only a head shot.

A good try at this Dragonfly. Macro photography is all about DOF and sharpness.
I feel this picture is just not smack on as the face is slightly blurred.

A daring macro of a dragonfly's face, Joe.
Obviously, you have made a success of it.
The details on the face are well captured, and if I use a bit of my imagination, I see a weird human face up front -- much like the one I see in the mirror every morning :-)!

Hi Joe.
Your first macro shot and dragonfly picture is great. Amazing magnification ratio, exact DOF and very nice colours. I advise you to try flash. Dragonflies like flash light
and sit quietly during photo session. My best wishes and TFS.

pour une premiere libellule en gros plan ce n'est pas mal,je ne sais pas si vous avez utilisé le flash mais sinon vous auriez pu le faire et regler a F/8 pour plus de profondeur de champ et plus de details,mais c'est un bon debut.

Joe amazing absolutely amazing. Lovely. You had to cut short the other areas because you had focused more on the eye. This is great. What was your experience in doing such a eye shot. Pls send me your details. I am sure you had excellent experience. TFS Ganesh
