The Black-tailed Skimmer, Orthetrum cancellatum, is a European dragonfly.

The male has a blue abdomen with a black tip and transparent wings, and the female has a yellowish brown body with black zigzag marks along the abdomen and the transparent wings.

This species has expanded its range, assisted by the creation of gravel pits which give it the extensive open unvegetated areas it prefers. It was first recorded in Great Britain in Essex in 1934.

Hi Joey,

What a superb shot of the Black-tailed Skimmer, very well presented composition and a fabulous pose with the head slightly turned towards the camera, the detail is very good indeed with nice lighting reflected on the wings and beautiful colours too. A Great shot for your 100th post.

This is another great one. You're just getting better and better and you were already good. :)
Wonderful composition - I like the long line dividing the photo created by the stem.
The Skimmer seems to sense you and he's actually showing off I think. :)

Congratulations, Joe!
You celebrate your 100th post with a fine capture of a Black-tailed Skimmer (check your title!) female with excellent POV, sharpness, BG and composition.
Look forwrd to seeing many more from you!

Well done Joe, speaking as a bit of a specialist when it comes to dragonflies, I'd have been proud of this shot. If you want some constructive critique, I'd have used just a slightly smaller aperture so as to bring the back wings just that little more into focus. I still feel had you had done this the background would have been blurred enough not to distract. The lighting is also a little on the harsh side, but that couldn't be helped my friend.

It's all to easy for me to sit here and criticise the shot, but all I'm trying to do is pass on one or two tips. Essentially though there isn't an awful lot wrong with the shot and it deserves all the credit it has so far recieved, well done to you!

Hi Joe

This is a splendid capture again from you of what seems to be a very young specimen.
I consider this to be one of your best dragonfly shots yet (if not the best one) because of the following reasons:
1. POV - the side view here is terrific both for the lovely pattern on the body but as well as for the wings; it also provided an excellent distance between the subject and the BG making the latter one blurry.
2. Light - the light comes towards the subject almost from your direction and it's also superb in means of color and intensity, saturating the colors very well.
3 DOF - very well managed; keeping exceptional focus on the entire body and head of the skimmer as well as most parts of the wings; the BG is a beauty (as i already mentioned) and the details you got here are impeccably sharp.
That being said, congrats for this 100th post! You keep getting better and better and i hope to see the same progress in autumn when i return :)

Bravo and TFS

Super capture to mark your 100th Joe.
Excellent sharpness, detail, color, light, DOF, POV, and bokeh..Especially like the glassy look of those wings..I think that just about covers it :)

Perfect macro shot Joe.
I'm very sorry, but I've missed this one.
Still want to congratulate you with this 100th and hope it's not to late.
Compo, BG, sharpness, clarity and colors are all great.
Excellent work. Thanks for sharing.
Best wishes, Harry
