Great to see another Lobster Moth larva. What strange insects they are. Amazingly, they turn into moths, not giant ants.
These moths are very scarce here and I was very lucky to have a sharp eyed son(David) who found this one in a lovely attitude. They look very much like ants and quite large and frightening. This one probably only half grown at about 2 cm length. You would not see it and think 'caterpillar' would you?

1999 Lobster Moth Stauropus fagi
(Linnaeus, 1758)
Wingspan 45-60 mm.

This unassuming species gets its English name not from the adult moth, but from the remarkable crustacean-like appearance of the caterpillar.

It is mainly distributed in the southern part of Britain, occupying woodland habitats, but is not especially common.

The larvae live on the leaves of beech (Fagus), oak (Quercus), and several other trees.

Desconozco este insecto, pero has conseguido una soberbia toma por su gran encuadre, originalidad en el equilibrio, enfoque y juego excelente con los colores. Una gran fotografía !! Saludos Julian.

Hello Julian,
You've captured this larva in a wonderful pose taking a look at it's own back end.
Strange , but for all beautiful they are indeed.
Composition, sharpness, clarity and details are great and the soft background, with it's green color tones, against wich the larva stands out peectly, is beautiful.
Excellent work.
Thanks for sharing,
Kind regards, Harry

Hi Julian, beautiful pose by this guy and an excellent sharp capture on your part. The detail and colour are very good. Is this a natural pose, like some kind of mimicry?

Hello Julian,
Brilliant capture of this interesting larva in a defensive pose. Excellent DOF, very sharp details and fine colours. It looks great against the dark green background. Well composed too.
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

This is great Julian, very unusual. You've managed to capture it in it's characteristic defence mode, which was lucky!
