Finally we had some weather warm and dry enough to allow a few of the larger dragonflies to emerge, allowing me to get a few shots of my favourite subject.
I just love these ancient insects, whose ancestors have been inhabiting this planet long before the dinosaurs came into existence. so for over 300million years they have been been with us, though some of them were a little larger than we have today a wing span of over 29inches / 80cm, though I understand this size was possible because the atmosphere had a higher concentration of oxygen allowing for more efficient breathing.
This one was found sunning it's self in the last of the evening sun on a grass stem in my back garden. and I was able to set up the camera on a tripod close enough for a full frame shot you see here.It is one of the larger british dragon flies, a Brown Hawker (Aeshna grandis)at almost 100mm/4ins across the hind wings and the copper coloured wings make this a fairly easy species to identiefy even on the wing.
Hope you enjoy the view, thanks for looking

Hello Robert,
technically a perfect picture with exact focus on the entire dragonfly. Wing venation is presented very sharp. Beautiful colour composition. The two grass leafs on the left break the otherwise clear axial symmetry of the picture.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Robert. The sun came out in Dorset but has gone again. this is a very good shot of the Hawker. I got one the other day but on the bushes only. Yours has fine detail and colour.the wings shine in the sun light. A nice POV/DOF. very well done TFS.
Nick..

So "brown" today ;-)
Hi, Robert, this dragon is fantastic and I never had the chance to see one so close in nature. Thanks, I love it

Hello Robert,
Wonderful Hawker you've captured.
Love the beautiful soft colors, color contrast between the brown tones of the dragonfly and the greens of the reed and the 4 lovely blue spots at the back of the Dragonfly.
At first I thought that the digonal green lines of the reed were a little distracting, but they are not.
In fact the break the vertical line of the dragonfly her body and the horizontal line of the wings beautifully.
The details and patterns in the wings and the perfectly matching background color are wonderful also.
Technically perfect work with great sharpness and lighting.
A ral beauty to look at.
Thanks for sharing and the good note.
Best wishes and good night.
Harry

Hi Robert

Unfortunately we sometimes forget all the hard work you voluntarily put into this site (all in the background). So I want to give you a special big THANK YOU.

This is a wonderful shot of the dragonfly, with a splendid BG well isolated by the DOF, superb colour saturation and pin sharp details. In appreciation for this and all the other wonderful postings you shared with us throughout the year, may there still be loads and loads of the same for the coming year.

As we now have already entered into the New Year...
may it open up more opportunities for you,
lead you unto the path of continued success,
happiness & good health.

Take time to enjoy God's creation and live life to the full.

A wonderful 2008 for YOU and your loved ones.

Best regards
Loot
