|This is another shot of the Bateleur Eagle at the Hawk Concervancy trust near Andover.|
The Bateleur is a large eagle that inhabits the tree and bush savanna throughout Africa south of the Sahara and eastward into Arabia. It may be considered one of the best known of the African raptors and one of the most beautiful. Its name is a French word describing a tightrope walker with a balancing pole.
The Bateleur is an excellent flyer, spending long hours in flight using the warm air currents to soar, sometimes covering up to 200 miles in its search for prey. During courtship it displays amazing and daring turns and somersaults in the air. It has a very short tail and the wings are long and pointed. The head, neck, underparts and wings are black, and the back is a red-brown. The legs are short and bright red.
The Bateleur is generally silent but capable of making loud screams when excited.
Bateleurs feed on carrion and live animals that are as large as small antelopes. It also takes birds and reptiles including the large monitor lizards.Reptiles taken include tortoises and venomous snakes. When attacking snakes, the bird raises its crest and spreads its wings. This, together with long, scaly legs, ensures that, should the snake strike, it will hit either feather or scales, neither of which will pass venom into the bird's blood stream.
These eagles build their nests in high trees, the clutch consisting of just one egg.
It may look odd but the beak is that colour.
Taken with 350D and 70 - 300 Canon and sharpened a tad in CS2.
This is a beautiful bird that flys magnificently. Whilst this shot was taken on the ground I hope that you like it.
Thanks for looking.

It is quite a beautiful bird Ferg. I love the colors of beak and eye area. Focus is sharp there too. I like the way the background color tones with him.

Imposing picture, you capture it very well
I love the portrait and its eyes.. Well Done
Très beau portrait dont la qualité du détail est renforcée par ce fond noir.
L'attitude de l'aigle donne vie à la photo de façon tout à fait naturelle .
C'est très beau.
Merci pour le partage.
