Latin name: Araneus diadematus

Size: Females up to 13mms, males up to 8mms.

Distribution: Found throughout the UK.

Months seen: June to October.

Habitat: Found in hedgerows, woodlands and gardens.

Food: Mostly flying insects.

Special features: Seen mostly in September and October, when the females sit, upside-down in the centre of their large, circular webs in trees and hedges.

The Garden spider is sometimes called the Cross spider because of the white '+' shaped marking on its abdomen.

The young spiderlings look very different, with their yellow bodies and triangular brown abdomen patch.

The newly emerged spiderlings remain grouped together in a ball. The slightest disturbance sends them running in all directions.

If you can't see the spider in the centre of the web, it is probably hiding under a leaf at the edge of the web, waiting for a victim to drop in. You can encourage the spider out by tickling the strands of the web with a blade of grass. The spider will think it is a trapped fly, and come racing out.

Daring but very impressive close-up shot of the spider, Joe.

Hi Joe,
Well I don't like spiders very much, but you captured this one very well. This one looks totaly different then the spiders that are in my garden. This one has very nice colours as for those in my garden are a sort of grey/braun. Good focus and well detailed.
TFS Paula

Super closeup. The color of this is such as it does not look as much like a spider. Very nice close work Joey. Lots of detail and fine notes.

Hello Joe,
This is a fine close macro of a Garden Cross Spider taken from a formidable POV showing its jaws and eyes very clearly. Fine contrasting BG and good angling in the composition.

Hi Joey

I am glad I am writing this first thin in the morning as this is the thing my nightmares are made of! Great POV and wonderful detail - you have captured the light shing through the body really well (at leat it looks squash-able)!

I had a look at the Chough I dedicated to you on my other screen - Nick (Nglen) is right it looks really grainy - looked ok on my usual TN screen - if you would like the RAW file I will send it to you so you can do your own version.

Joey, Very nice closeup shot and excellent focus. I just hope I am not the next target of this spider. Just joking. Excellent friend and thanks for sharing. Ganesh

Oh, I'm afraid Joey :) This is an impressive POV with excellent composition. This beauty has most beautiful color and eyes! I really like this composition. This is very well done! Thanks,

bonjour joe
une macro tres detaillée sur les crochets de l'araignée,on voit bien les yeux, par contre du aurait du choisir un reglage plus fermé du diaphragme pour une plus grzande profondeur de champ.
