Hello,

this was shot today at Richmond Park, in London. I'm dedicating this to Karan (Hester), who provided some great information as to where they could be found.
I went along with Nick Glen (nglen) and also met up with Joe Kellard (Joey) too. A great time was had watching these impressive animals challenging each other for posession of the valued females, who looked on seemingly unimpressed.

Latin name: Cervus elaphus

Size:

The male is about 140cm at the shoulder, and the female is approximately 120cm. Adult males can weigh up to 200kg.

Distribution:

Wild populations can be found in the Scottish Highlands, north Devon, the Lake District, the Quantock Hills and the New Forest. There are also many herds in parks throughout the UK.

Months seen:

All year. They are at their noisiest during October which is the time of the 'rut'.

Habitat:

Dense woods and open moorlands

Food:

Grass and low growing vegetation, as well as leaves on trees. This can be noticed on the trees in the area which have a perfectly flat bottom to their branches, about two metres from the ground, which is the maximum height the deer can reach.

Special features:

Although there are six species of deer living in Britain, only the red deer and the roe deer are native. The red deer is our largest native land animal.

shot in RAW, tweaked curves, converted to JPEG, reszied and sharpened.

Thanks for looking..

Hi Paul,
I was waiting on your return from Richmond Park. So I am glad to capture it before I have to watch BBC 2. I am also glad to see your first photo with your big gun.
Love the moment and the awesome pose. I like the way its comming out of the high ferns. Details are good, catch light in the eye is wonderful. The photo could be a bit sharper and have less noise.
TFS,
Niek

It is the light and the pose that makes this image. It's a great capture. How much did you crop this? It may have lost a bit of resolution. It is the same story with our elk. The bulls worry themselves into a frenzy running around and bugling while the females almost yawn and couldn't care less... MEN!!!! : )

Paul...This is an inspiring picture. Perhaps it is the lighting which makes it more of a dramatic image. This photo has feeling to it. Caught my eye as soon as I awoke this am...

Hi Paul

Super wide-angle landscapes and big zoom shots, too? WOW! Great work my friend!
Nice to hear you filks there are having some nice social meetings, too...i'm sure it's a lot of fun and also educational to meet with other TN members and go shooting together...
Anyway, back to the shot, it's really beautiful!
Beginning with the soft and warm light that just did wonders with the tones and colors, all the way to the timing - catching him while roaring - it's all exceptional.

I took the liberty and read your discussion with Niek. In relation to that, after carefully examining the shot i must ask you what focus did you use: manual or auto. Becasue if it's auto, then it might be a little off - you see here, it era facing us is a little out of focus already while teh ferns behind him are still in a good focus...and if it actually is so, then i'm affraid it might be the lens. Either way, i'm looking forward for your post from tonight.

Anyway (again), i really like this shot, and for one fo teh first times you've tried this very long lens, it's a terrific result. Congrats!

Take care and TFS
Horia
