This was taken earlier on in the year while camping in the New Forest. We'd made a trip to a wildlife sanctuary and on the way back to the campsite we stopped off at a large stream. These Banded Damoiselles were flitting about all over the place and finally one stopped so I could take a photo... I hope you like this one :)

The Damselfly (Suborder Zygoptera) is an insect in the Order Odonata. Damselflies are similar to dragonflies, but the adults can be differentiated by the fact that the wings of most damselflies are held along the body when at rest. Furthermore, the hindwing of the damselfly is essentially similar to the forewing, while the hindwing of the dragonfly broadens near the base, caudal to the connecting point at the body. Damselflies are also usually smaller, weaker fliers than dragonflies, and their eyes are separated.

Damselflies undergo incomplete metamorphosis, with an aquatic nymphal stage. The female lays eggs in water, sometimes in underwater vegetation, or high in trees in bromeliads and other water-filled cavities. Nymphs are carnivorous, feeding on daphnia, mosquito larvae, and various other small aquatic organisms. The gills of damselfly nymphs are large and external, resembling three fins at the end of the abdomen. After moulting several times, the winged adult emerges and eats flies, mosquitoes, and other small insects. Some of the larger tropical species are known to feed on spiders, hovering near the web and simply plucking the spider from its perch.

Thanks for looking and your comments! :D

hi joe
excellent sharpness and lighting
the metallic green color really looks awesome!!
goos details and composition

Like this alot, crisp, clear, and very detailed.

Hi Joe,
Wonderful image of a damselfly. Sharp focus and perfect exposure. All details are well seen. Very nice color clarity.

You call it metallic..I call it sharkskin once more..I wonder if th eword is still used. I had a sports jacket of this colour but rarely wore it...if it were here now it would be 50 plus years old...it was a popular combination of colours which I have only seen on insects such as this..since..

Very good Joey!

C'est vrai qu'elle ressemble à un bijou.
Bonne journée.

Hello Joe,

A wonderful image of a damselfly. I never heard about this insect. I'm glad to see this one on my screen. Beautiful capture. Very, very sharp. The glow on the wings and body. Amazing. The proportions between the damselfly and the leaves gives a good expression about the size of this insect. POV, BG and DOF are good. Natural colours. A perfect photo, well done. Regards and TFS BOB

Hello Joe,
a fine capture of the damselfly. A nice composition and beautiful colours. Due to high sharpness, the details become very clear. Light is very pleasant bringing up only slight reflections on the wings and the 'metallic' body.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Joey

A nice break from your visit to the butterfly house and a great comback to natural habitats :) Don't get me wrong, i like your photos from there, but i always thought it's nice to mix things up :)
A splendid macro of this Calopteryx virgo, shining so beautifully against that uniform BG.
The vibrant colors and refletions from the damsel here really bring it out so well, even from the thumbnail.
Excellent sharpness across the entire body, despite using that great shallow DOF. Well exposed and composed.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Joe,
that's wonderful, this damsel is so beautiful - but also very shy, not easy to catch so close. Very well done, thanks
