This Colourful Lilac Breasted Roller, is a resident of London zoos new African bird enclosure.
This is a well designed walk through enclosure, housing a variety of African birds. All of the birds seemed quite comfortable with people walking amongst them. With no awkward wire to shoot through, and multiple Viewing angles, this is one of the best walk through enclosures I've been in.

Some roller facts.

The Rollers are an Old World family of near passerine birds. They resemble crows in size and build, but are more closely related to the kingfishers and bee-eaters. They share the colourful appearance of those groups, blues and browns predominating. The two inner front toes are connected, but not the outer one.

These are insect eaters, usually catching their prey in the air. They often perch prominently whilst hunting, like giant shrikes. The group gets its name from the aerial acrobatics some of these birds perform.

These are birds of warm climates. They nest in an unlined tree-hole, and lay 2-4 eggs.

Beautiful shot. Stunning colours and great position on the branch. Very sharp too against the nice soft background.
Well done.
Regards Toni

Beautiful capture of an extremely beautiful bird. This one looks as if he owns the world ;-))

Not a bad capture for a zoo shot. Plumage is perhaps not as imaculate as in wilid birds but its still a good illustration of teh species.

Hi Alan,

This is my favorite African bird. The colors are amazing and the pose is superb. The white light in the background is not disturbing.
