Bog Beacon – Mitrula Paludosa

The fruit bodies usually occur in swarms amongst rotting leaves in wet places, mostly in ditches (exactly where these were), and are fairly common in late spring. It is an attractive species, the bright yellowish orange head being very distinctive and easy to spot, hence the common name. Not poisonous, but too small and tasteless, and quite worthless as an edible species.

(Collins wild guide)

Taken in a very muddy New Forest.

Image cropped and contrast adjusted.

Thanks for taking the time to look.

An interesting one Julia.
I'd not seen or heard of this one before.
Does it open up to a cap at all?

Julia, excellent artistic shot of this Bog Beacon. It is like a beacon shining out through the muddy ground. Very, very well done. Colours are great too. TFS.

Sharp, and interesting note. Thanks!

Hello Julia! Wonderful contrast in your composition, the bright orange and the earthy leaves in the gooey water. It does rather resemble a beacon lighting the way. Most unusual. Very good closeup! Well done!

Belle et intéressante composition macro-photographique pour ce tout petit champignon orange. Jolies couleurs et bonne netteté.
Very Well Done !

Intersting post I looked up its family tree, I was surprised to see that it in the Helotiaceae been that has a stipe. Nice POV and colours.

Saw a few of these out in the Forest last weekend and couldn't find out what they were. Thanks for enlightening me. the orange really stands out against the wet leaves. Kev.

This is really good Julia, it's nice to see you are using the polarising filter - works well eh? I don't think I've seen this fungi before. The colours are great and I love the BG. Very well done.
