[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This was taken today at Stocker's lake on a small meeting with Necip and Nick (nick27) again. The weather wasn't on our side for most of the day but the sun did appear and allowed me to get some shots of the many birds there. This Red-Crested Pochard was the highlight of the day for me and was one of three new species I have photographed - the other two were the Common Pochard and Egyptian Goose.

All in all a really great day!

Thankyou very much to Necip for putting up with me for a second time :-)

I have dedicated this one to Josh Lewis for being great friend through email and also fo his nice dedication to me.

I hope you like it!

Latin name
Netta rufina

Family
Swans, ducks and geese (Anatidae)

Overview
Larger than a pochard, the male has an orange-brown head with a red beak and pale flanks. Females are brown with pale cheeks. In flight they show whitish primaries. They dive, dabble and up-end for their food. There is a large population in Spain and nearer but smaller numbers in France, Netherlands and Germany - and occasional wild birds may come to the UK from the Continent. The UK breeding birds almost certainly all come from escaped birds.

Where to see them
Found mainly in southern and eastern England, where breeding populations have become established following excapes from captivity. Occasional wild birds may occur in places like Abberton Reservoir, Essex.

When to see them
All year round

What they eat
Stems, roots and seeds of aquatic vegetation.

Thankyou for viewing!

Hello Joe,
Your last close-up photos are so good! Also in this photo the details are really perfect. The clear colours excellent. Not easy to make a choice for a good composition, but this one is brilliant. Very good DOF.
