[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Peacock Butterfly Inachis io) is widespread in the Uk and is easily recognised by the large eyes in the corners of both front and hind wings whilst the underside is almost black and well camouflaged. Male wingspan is 63-68mm and the females 67-75mm. The adults hibernate over winter and the butterfly is one of the first on the wing on warm spring days. It is a highly adapatable species but the best sites are where the favoured food plants (willow in spring, teasles, thistles and buddleias in summer) are found. They feed during the morning and males will then establish territories from which the see off other males and persue females. Large batches of eggs are laid in nettle patches. Hibernation takes place in September in dark sheletered crevices in trees, garden sheds and even church towers.

Field Scabious (Knautia arvensis)is a medium tall, hairy perennial which grows to 1m high and is indigenous to the UK. Flowers are bluish-lilac and the heads are 15-30mm and bloom between June and October. It likes dry, grassy and cultivated areas but not heavy soils and can be found in meadows, footpath edges, fields and dry slopes.
Taken at the local nature reserve the Peacock butterflies have been plentiful this year as has the crop of Field Scabious.

Jax, Beautiful specimen. Love the blood red that predominates through its wingspan. Your presentation (wings @ 45 degrees) works very well. Your DOF includes the fore-wing eyes & seems to give the photo balance. Very Nice!

I can't remember seeing a peacock in the flesh this year. Very nice shot, lovely colours and composition. One part of me likes the DOF here, and one part wishes it was deeper, which wins I couldn't say. Superb stuff. Well done Jax.

The maroon and blue to lilca, on the wings, juxtaposed on the Purple -blue flower of the same hue really makes this work for me. Well done!

This is really an excellent capture of this beauty followed by an interesting note Jax. Very good colours, well used dof to set the focus on the head and leting the tail just drop out of focus which makes an interesting composition in a well cropped picture. Only nit - there is some noise in the background which could easyli be removed using NeatImage - download a free version here. So I took the liberty to do it for you - hope it is OK.

I saw a nice meadow full in the peak district at the week-end, they are a great flower, this one is spot on in capture, the peacock seems to fall off in DOF rather rapidly, but it doesnt seem to affect the overal effect of the imageas the flower and head are taking centre stage. Nice one.

Great capture of this beautiful butterfly on a flower which compliments his colours nicely. Nice diagonal and oof background. Great sharpness on the front of him and fading off towards the background.

The POV and the handling of focus from front to back gives this composition a nice touch. You have succeeded in capturing it very well. Thanx for sharing.
