This was taken way back in February at Cotswold Wildlife Park in Burford. There was a whole group of these tiny Otters standing up-right on a single boulder kind of like Meercats :-) This one kept squeaking before finally turning round to look straight down the lens :-)

I hope you like it!

Here's some info on this Otter...

The Oriental Small-clawed Otter, Aonyx cinerea also known as Asian Small-clawed Otter is the smallest otter in the world.

The Oriental Small-clawed Otter is found in mangrove swamps and freshwater wetlands of Bangladesh, southern India, China, Taiwan, Indochina, Peninsular Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, preferring to live near water.

The full grown otters measure approximately 0.9m from nose to tail tip, and can weigh up to 5kg.They feed on fish, frogs, crabs, crayfish and shellfish.

These otters are especially distinct for their forepaws, as the claws do not extend above the fleshy end pads of their toes and fingers. These attributes give them human-like proficiency and coordination to the point which they can use their paws to feed on mollusks, crabs and other small aquatic animals.

The Oriental Small-clawed Otter lives in extended family groups with only the alpha pair breeding and previous offspring helping to raise the young.

Due to ongoing habitat loss, pollution and hunting in some areas, the Oriental Small-clawed Otter is evaluated as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

This species was formerly thought to be the only member of the genus Amblonyx, however it has recently been confirmed as Aonyx after mitochrondrial DNA analysis (Koepfli and Wayne, 1998). There also have been issues with the species name for the Oriental Small-clawed Otter and can be found as cinereus and cinerea. However the current IUCN name is Aonyx cinereus, while "Mammal Species of the World" lists it as cinerea.

I have also added a load more photos to my website: WildLight Galleries, if you would like to have a look :-)

Hallo Joe
What an adorable, endearing and cute little animal. This is definitely a photo to ooh and aah about. It has a high cuteness factor, with a real innocent "Stuart Little" movie character face (Although the character was a mouse). This is a stunning portrait and deserves a round of applause. I like the big black eyes, the longish whiskers and that round dark brown snout. I appreciated and enjoyed this one tremendously. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards

What a beautiful otter Joe!
(Reminds me of 'Ring Of Bright Water')
He looks as he's just been had a feed of something muddy.
Perfect capture with excellent detail and a nice catchlight in the eyes.
I think I might have been tempted to take out a tiny bit of blue. Its just a touch hazy around the face.
An awesome shot though.
Great work once again.

Hey ... thanks for the lens.It arrived today. (Did you get my email telling you?)
Now I just have to work out how to attach it.
My camera had a lens hood and adapter for that, but I dont know if its a lens adapter too. I might have to try and find a forum online to find out.
The camera shop guys here know nothing about it,and the manual has nothing about attaching lenses.
I'm sure I'll suss it out eventually.

Hi Joe.
a very fine portrait and nice pose of the utter.
The colours are nice but maybe it's just a wee too much
sharpen but that is minor nit.
Well done, young friend.

Glad Midsommar.

Hey Joey, you've captured beautifully, one of my favourite animals. You've managed to capture that sense of curiousity and playfulness. The colours are lovely and everything I have read about photography so far says gets closer, now get closer etc etc. That the closer you can get and the more you can fill the frame with your subject the better and you've done this here. He's beautifully sharp. Lovely photo mate.

Hi Joe

nice portrait...
good details on the face of a kute animal..
it´s a pitty that the BG is almost in the same tone of the otter, but in the oposite side the DOF is great and improves the image...

Hello Joe,

Who couldm't be captivated by this!
The sharpness of the details is incredible!
How smart that he is looking straight at the camera with such a good eye reflection!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

I have seen one in my wilderness and was surprised. Of course I was not able to get close. that was it's natural home and it knew ways through the bushes and snow fields better than I. Great capture of the characteristics of the face. An angle which we do not see often...l

Hi Joe,

This dirty-faced Otter is precious. He has an unhappy look on his face - maybe he only found mud and no food. Eyes, mouth and nose are all wonderful and I love those long whiskers. I think he wants to be a poster boy the way he is staring into the camera. Excellent shot as always.

Hola Joe.
Esta Nutria tiene una hermosa mirada de inocencia que se refleja bellamante en la foto gracias a la fina presentacion y el encuadre o recorte elegido. Me gustan mucho sus largos bigotes y al parecer hizo una travesura
Saludos Joe.

Hello Joe

A super portrait of this handsome otter.
You have managed excellent eye contact.
The pov is terrific.
He must have been eating some muddy fish.

Hi Joe,
Think he's a bit sad 'cause England isn't playing in Euro 2008. Ohooh that's not very nice:-)

Hi Joe!

It's always a pleasure to observe an otter, they are so vivid and playful. Moreover, as very well shown in your picture, they are neat and sweet. Your picture reflects a lot of details and is perfectly sharp.

I once had the chance to observe one near a river not far from my home.

Kind regards

Hi Joe, splendid portrait of cute creature with fine details and excellent sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

The face of this Otter reminds me of one of my old professors of my college days, Joe :-)!
Sadly, he passed away a few years ago, so my association of your subject with him is tinged with fond memories.
This is yet another great portrait picture from you.
This sunbject has a character that shows in this picture.
Thanks and all the best.

Good to be back on Treknature! I see you have some more wonderful photos! Joey, this is a really good Otter photo! Very nice notes, this one is going into my favorites! :-) Thanks for sharing this one with us Joey! Cheers Josh Lewis.
