Another atempt at Macro;s as the weather was nice for ONCE! there were loads of Hoverflies hanging aroung my Garden

Flies in the Diptera family Syrphidae are commonly known as hoverflies, flower flies, or Syrphid flies.

As their common names suggest, they are often seen hovering or nectaring at flowers; the adults of many species feed mainly on nectar and pollen, while the larvae (maggots) eat a wide range of foods. In some species, the larvae are saprotrophs, eating decaying plant and animal matter in the soil or in ponds and streams. In other species, the larvae are insectivores and prey on aphids, thrips, and other plant-sucking insects.

Aphids alone cause tens of millions of dollars of damage to crops worldwide every year; because of this, aphid-feeding hoverflies are being recognized as important natural enemies of pests, and potential agents for use in biological control. Some adult syrphid flies are important pollinators.

About 6,000 species in 200 genera have been described. Hoverflies are common throughout the world and can be found on every continent except Antarctica. Hoverflies are harmless despite their mimicry of the black and yellow stripes of wasps, which act to ward off predators.

Hoverflies and Gardening

Many species of Hoverfly larvae prey upon pest insects, including the leafhoppers which spread some diseases like curly top, and aphids. Therefore they are seen in biocontrol as a natural means of reducing the levels of pests.

Gardeners, therefore, will sometimes use companion plants to attract hoverflies. Those reputed to do so include alyssum, Iberis umbellata, statice, buckwheat, chamomile, parsley, and yarrow.

Hi Hilary. This is a very sharp well detail close up of the Hoverfly. Your use of the light has given fine detail and rich colours. a nice POV/DOF. The insect stands out so well on the flower. well done TFS.

Excellent work Hil - there certainly are plenty of these beautiful insects around at present. Perfect DOF, focus and exposure. It's on some variety of Hebe by the look of it - they are a popular garden shrub related to Foxgloves.
Kind Regards

hi Hilary
superbe image colorée et vive, le pov est parfait pour en avoir plein les yeux.

Hi Hilary.
A very sharp shot with superb colours and contrast.

You can put that camera to bed in the master bedroom tonight Hil...Wow...Where did you get that nice technique? Now you're more into the teach mode for me...this is a tough shot...simply superior! One of the best you have posted in a while. Not to denigrate any others but this one is just super.

I hardly call this an attempt Hilary. It looks like you've been doing these for years. Incredible focus. An exceptional composition around the hover fly too. It even looks good in your framing.
Enjoy your week.

If this is an attempt, Hil, me wonders what the learn-ed effect is going to be!!!!!!!
You leave me spell bound!
Stunning is the word, nothing less,my friend!

Hi Hilary,

What a beautiful macro you did! I had a very good feeling looking at your photo. The way you used light is excelent rendering natural vivid color tones. Image quality is very good as you had a well adapted to the subject DOF. Therefore detail of insects body are rasor sharp.

Thank you for sharing,

Hallo Hil
This is such a lovely sight. A beautiful display of colour and detail on one image. There are a lot of details on this beautiful Hoverfly to observe and appreciate. One of it being the fine body hairs so beautifully displayed. The patterns and markings on this insect’s body are so vivid and the clarity captured is excellent. I like the gold colour of the upper part of the body. Composition, focus and sharpness are great and very pleasing to the eye. The lavender coloured flower on which the fly is resting on, highlights the detail and colour of the insect to a great extent. Kind regards and thanks for sharing.

Merhaba Hil,

Hi Hil,

The colors in this shot are amazing. So deep and vivid - I love the yellow, black and violet. Fantastic details of the insect - with my lack of knowledge of insects I would have thought it was a bee. The transparent wings are marvelous. Great shot!
