Yesterday was the first time in a few weeks i have been able to go down to the river for a walk. Still not feeling 100% i did not go to far but just sat on a seat . I have seen a branch in the river before and people have said the Kingfisher use it to fish from. Well this is my first picture of a Kingfisher I know its far from perfect but i would like to share it with all the same. I shall now go back to the same spot on a brighter day and try again. This was taken from the side of the river about 25mt away. so i have had to crop it. Next time i will go to the other side which is nearer to the branch.

Kingfisher ( Alcedo atthis ) Length 16 - 17cm
A dazzlingly attractive bird but colours often appear muted when seen sitting in the shade. Has orange - red underparts and mainly blue upperparts. Electric blue back seen to best effect when bird is seen flying low over water. Often seen in overhead branches watching river for small fish. When opportunity arises it will plunge headlong into water, catching prey in bill which is swallowed whole head first and sometimes stunned by beating head of fish on a branch.
Nests in holes excavated in river bank. Widespread and fairly common on fish rich rivers , lake and flooded gravel pits , can be seen in much of Ireland and Britain, becoming scarce in the north of Scotland. In winter can be seen on sheltered rocky coast in cold weather.

Hello Nicholas,
Pretty bird and good exposition, maybe BG isn't enough blurred and it distract attention a little.
Regards, Pawel

Hello Nick
I am pleased to hear your feeling better but unfortunately still not 100%
This capture is as you say a little distant from perfect but its one I would love to have taken..(I love that river that where you took this shot)
You seem to be posting a few shots with the 50-500 now...Have you purchased one?
I never use apertures as high as F16...F8 is about perfect to achieve the best sharpness in the lense and still get a good shutter speed.
All the best Paul

Paul

hi nicholas,
the common kingfisher is very beautiful but not your image, which is very far from perfect. why f16, generally people use small aperture on long lens to get those background out of focus to separate the birds from it. f5.6 or f8 if sufficient to get the bird sharp and in depth. you are going to visit the place again for kingfisher, try different apertures to see yourself. tfs.

Hello Nicholas,

The bird looks a littel bit sad but the photo looks great. I like the sharp image of the bird on the blurry background. Colors are fine and naturaly looking and the glance of light in bird's eye bring even more life to the photo.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hello Nicholas,
You are better and that's already very good:-)
There are some technical issues, I guess. You already worked your strategy, I see:-)
Next time the Kingfisher is yours.
Still on my wish list the Kingfisher:-(
Good evening and TFS

Hi Nick,

It's always exciting to get one's first of a species. I would be thrilled to see a Kingfisher. You captured him in a perfect pose with lovely colors and good details. I love the way he is separated from the colorful background.

Very colorful little bird with great detail. Very nice!

Isn't it NOT funny but in a way...they call these the "Golden Years", but I cannot say that..and if I did I would use it without capitalizing the Golden..rather golden..I am lucky to have traveled so much...so very very much in my younger years..and live out many dreams I had...so I can relate to ANY illness or infirmity in folks over 55...

This is a fine image...and worth of praise tonight die to your situation and considering how gentle nature has been with you..and you back with it... A fine capture and very much appreciated with all of teh notations which accompany! My hats tipped to you sir!
Bob

Hi Nick,
Congratulations for your first Kingfisher! I don't yet have any shots. It takes patience and preparation to succeed. It is very good actually though there are some signs of heavy cropping. Good pose and composition, bright colours and nice sharp details.

Congratulations Nick!
OK its not perfect but it is very good shot of a Kingfisher, something that I haven't got near to achieving yet.
The kingfisher itself is sharp and stands out against the busy BG. Taken from a great POV too.
Thanks for sharing this beauty and I hope you recover fully soon,
Ivan

Hi Nick,
i am glad to hear you have managed to get out now. Jai told me how ill you'd actually been, not just man flu! It would be great to have you along to Richmond, but i totally understand if you can't make it. Ya lazy beggar ;o)
Anyway, i'm a bit jealous that you have managed to get one of my goals here - a Kingfisher, no less, at last! I know where you took this, i think, and you did an awesome job. Great colours, nicely composed a good job on the cropping. Curious as to why you used f/16 though...
All the best,
Paul

Hy Nick
Your first capture of this bird is simply perfect in my eyes. Congratulation!
