I'm not the best at capturing Butterflies, first of all they just seen to fly past me, then when they do stop I can't get the focus right, after splashing out a whole £1 last year I'm now the proud owner of a Buddliea which managed to attract a couple this year, this is the best I could manage. I also captured a few on a Buddliea outside my place of work last week but its was on a little point and click so I didn't get much detail. Maybe with a bit more patience and better weather I will get more next year.

The European Peacock

The European Peacock butterfly (Inachis io), more commonly known simply as the Peacock butterfly, is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe and Asia. It is the only member of the genus Inachis which is sometimes included in Nymphalis. It should not be confused or classified with the "American peacocks" in the genus Anartia; these are not close relatives of the present species. The peacock butterfly is resident in much of its range, often wintering in buildings or trees. It therefore often appears quite early in spring.

Reproduction and Food

The butterfly hibernates over winter before laying its eggs in early spring, in batches of up to 500 at a time. The caterpillars, which are shiny black with six rows of barbed spikes and a series of white dots on each segment, hatch after about a week and feed on nettles and hops.

The adult butterflies drink nectar from a wide variety of flowering plants, including buddleia, sallows, dandelions, wild marjoram, danewort, hemp agrimony, and clover; they also utilize tree sap and rotten fruit.

Habitat

The Peacock can be found in woods, fields, meadows, pastures, parks, and gardens, and from lowlands up to 8,200 feet (2,500 m) elevation. It is a relatively common butterfly seen in many European parks and gardens.

Hi Hilary. This is a fine capture of the Butterfly . which you have taken with fine detail and rich colours. I like the top POV so we can see all the wing markings. The Buddliea was a good buy for £1 . Well done TFS.
Nick..

Gosh Hil you're image is so full of colour and life...I almost feel badly having the "morbidity" image as your neighbor. I don't mind though as to me...your image is quite delightful and certainly not without most wonderful and complex patterns...Among butterflies it i a standout image!
Bob

Hello Hilary,
Bright image. Good depth of field.
The top point of view is very effective.
TFS:-)

Hi Hil.
I cannot imagine more beautiful scene. Flowers, butterfly and leaves of the BG are wonderful and POV and composition of the image are great too. Brilliant reproduction of all tiny details and all colour tones, impressive sharpness of the flower and butterfly image, pleasant delicate lighting and smoothness of the BG. Well done and my compliments.
