This view reminded me of an airshow I saw several years ago and a large helicopter was doing all these acrobatics in the air just like this Migrant Hawker :-)

I hope you like it!

Migrant Hawker - Aeshna Mixta

A medium sized hawker flying in late summer to early autumn. Prior to the 1940s the Migrant Hawker was considered a rare resident and scarce immigrant species to southern England. Since then it has spread through England and Wales reaching Lancashire, Cheshire and Cornwall by the early 1990s. It was recorded in the Isle of Man in 1998. In southern England the species has benefited from the availability of flooded gravel pits such that it is now one of the commonest species. Large numbers are still considered to arrive from the continent in late summer.

This species may be confused with Aeshna juncea the Common Hawker however in the latter species the costa is yellow (as opposed to brown) and the male has long and narrow antehumeral stripes whereas in the Migrant Hawker they are much shorter. The male Hairy Dragonfly Brachytron pratense has similar blue spots on the abdomen but has a much earlier fight period.

KEY IDENTIFICATION FEATURES
Both sexes have a yellow golf tee-shaped marking on Dorsal surface of abdominal segment 2
Short antehumeral stripes
The sides of abdominal segment 2 are blue in mature males
Anal appendages in both sexes are very long
Costa is brown

Thanks!

Hi Joe,this is surely one the best dragonfly ,the colors and the size of Aeshna are impressives. This pis is great, isn't easy to take this dragon in flight and have results so perfects! My best compliments, the details of the eyes are fantastics!!Have a nice day,Luciano

Hi Joe

Probably the most difficult in-flight shot of a dragon to capture. I know they hover in front of you, but its still an art to capture one, well done. Great sharpness around the head and body. Good composition and great background.

Hi Joe
Very nice image. Good face to face POV. Perfect OOF background. Also good informative note

Bringing out the big guns eh Joey...The image smacks of motion...the wings flapping give it a dynamic...still a hard thing for me to even imagine you and a couple others imaging as this...Well done..

Hello Joe,
With a very sharp focus on the head and the moving wings this photo gives the best impression of a flying hawker. Very beautiful light and colours. The BG, POV and composition are perfect.

Peter

Hi Joe,

You have outdone yourself! An amazing in-flight shot of this Hawker that does remind me of a helicopter. You have frozen him beautifully. Wonderful colors and details. A superb background and composition.

Hello Joe,
perfect macro shot with superb focus, great plain BG and nicely composed. Blurred wing shows its fligt action greatly. we say sometimes "helikopter" for it in Turkish. Language different but many thing common:)
I try to several times dragons in flight, its very hard usually.
Thanks so much for this great work. best wishes
Ahmet

Hi Joe, fantastic flying dragonfly, splendid focus, great capure with excellent details and wonderful sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Joe,
Excellent helicopter, though I would not try flying with it;-) You have managed to take a very good in-flight close-up picture showing how the wings work in different sequence, never thought about that before. Good sharpnes of details in the middle and suitably blurred wings to show the movement. Great work!

Hi Joe,

You have done an excelent photo with this flying insect. There is a very good sharpness in your image despite the obvious mouvement of the dragonfly.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Nice shot Joey! These kinds of photos are great! I like seeing flying Dragon Flies, and I know how hard they are to capture. Was it hard for you to capture this one? And nice notes Joey! Keep up the great work! Cheers Josh Lewis.
