A pair of Common Snipes at Bough Beech Reservoir nature reserve.

From Birdguides:

Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago)

Identification
A Snipe can easily be identified, either by its extraordinarily long bill or by its familiar camouflaged plumage with stripes through its head and down its back. When flushed, a Snipe rises noisily and vertically, zig-zagging to a height before dropping some distance away. The long bill, pointed wings and stripey plumage are usually visible and the white trailing edge to the wing should stand out.

Habitat
Breeds in marshes and boggy areas. Winters on saltmarshes, coastal lagoons and other marshy areas.

Behaviour
The springtime display of the Snipe is something special. He usually starts by flying methodically over the breeding site, calling loudly but then he suddenly dives down with his outer tail feathers at right angles so that the rushing air makes them hum, a display known as 'drumming'.

Migration
The British and Irish populations are largely sedentary, but birds from northern and eastern Europe migrate south during July-October, returning March-May.

Hello Pekka,

It is not easy to photograph these birds. You did it fine. Bird are shown in a fine pose being obvious there were not frightened by your presence. Itis tha pattern and colors of the plumage that makes them look so well against the green background.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hi Pekka,

A delightful shot of these two Snipes wading and drinking. They are both in perfect focus with wonderful colors and razor sharp details. The setting is beautiful - the reflections are wonderful - the composition is lovely.

Jane

Hello Pekka

These are not easy birds to shoot.
They still have the look in their eyes that they know something is going on.
Lovely composition in a natural setting with no obstructions.
Well done.
