Yesterday, I met up with Nick Glen and went to a camera show in Southampton. I got to try out lots of cool gear including some that I hope to buy after my current debt has been payed off (which will be very soon!).
After the show, even though the weather was awful, me and Nick met up with Pekka at Blashford Lakes. We sat in a couple of hides, one looking over a forest, the other looking over a lake. The lake view wasn't particularly good though the forest hide was incredible! I've never seen such a huge amount of birds at once! There were Blue Tits, Coal Tits, Great Tits, Willow Tits, Siskins, Robins, Chaffinches, Greenfinches, Collared Doves, and best of all... Bramblings!!! :-))
I've always wanted to see a Brambling let alone photograph them and there were loads of them and loads of opportunities to photograph them! If the weathers wasn't so horrible then it would have been heaven :-)

I hope you like it!

Brambling - Fringilla montifringilla

Family
Finches (Fringillidae)

Overview
Similar in size and shape to the chaffinch, the male has a black head in summer, and an orange breast with white belly. In flight it shows a long white rump. Gregarious in winter, it may form flocks of many thousands and often joins with chaffinches. Numbers can vary between winters depending on food supplies.

Where to see them
In winter likes beech woodland, farmland fields near woods. Look in flocks of chaffinches and other finches. In autumn look along east coast woodlands and fields. Will visit gardens in winter.

When to see them
Watch out for them from mid-September until March and April. Occasional birds stay into May or even later.

What they eat
Seeds in winter; insects in summer.

Thanks!

Hello Joe,

Great shot.
Beautiful photo of this interesting bird.
Light, focus and sharpness are splendid.
Good composition.

Hi Joe,
a great shot of "Bergfinken", the sharpness and details are
on top and so are the beautiful pattern and colours.
This time the WB is correct. The bird standout well from the clean BG.
It's always nice to sit in a hide and let the birds come close.
Well done, young friend.

/Gert

Hi Joey,

good to see the first Brambling on TN this year (Uups, wrong, Nick Glen had one posted earlier). You got it in nice color, very detailed, the pale light makes for a yellow tinge. Ideal background too.

Best regards
Dietrich

Hello Joe,
Looks like you had a successful trip!
This is a great shot of a male Bramling in winter plumage with good use of the ISO 800 to make the best use of the poor light.
You achieved pretty good sharpness and the pose and POV are excellent.
Well done and thanks for sharing this beauty,
Have a good week,
Ivan

I read Nicks deal about the hide...but I don't think he addressed my Q&A about a 'flask':-) Very nice Joey..I have cut you some slack..yesterdays post was a dupe..and I found it and removed the older...loosing 50...I feel as though I am in the stock market:-) this is just super Joey. Quite the talent even in company of elders...
Bob

A macro full of color and with very good definition, it is very nice! nice job! Carme.

Hi Joe,

I'm not sure if I have seen a Brambling before - maybe a picture here on TN. It's too bad you guys had such bad weather but this shot is a winner. Beautiful pose, magnificent colors and superb details of the face, wings and plummage. The background and composition are wonderful.

Thanks for posting.

Ciao Joe, beautiful diagonal composition with lovely bird, fantastic colors, fine details and splendid sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Joe,
I think I have captured the same bird but I think your picture is better than any of mine. So lets see when I will post one. Good pose and composition, sharp details and the colours are extremely good considering the bad weather. It does not show here at all, except by the small droplets of water which actually make it better.

Cheers

Hi Joe,
bad weather not withstanding I think you have done well with this photo as the pov and colours look very good but as you say the weather wasn't optimum and as a result the focus is a titch off but still a very worthwhile one to have shared with us.Thanks for sharing.I hope you can get an opportunity in the years to come to make a living doing wildlife photography as you have shown a knack for getting great photos and failing that, have some work related connection with nature.Keep up the wonderful work and never lose your enthusiasm for nature. Hello Joe

This is a beautiful bird I can understand why finding and photographing it would be so much fun.
The details are sharp with lovely feather definition. The markings are well seen.
Very good colour saturation, the tones are rich.
Excellent POV and DOF.
The bird is sharply focused against the wonderful OOF BG.
Great job.
Suitable for framing and putting on the wall as art!

OOOH! Well I never!
I've never even heard of such a thing.
I thought 'brambling' was the English word for blackberry picking.
It sort of looks kinda sparrowy chaffinchy sort of,but not reely.
Anyway,go on ya for finding this wee chappie and getting a photo for us.
Cheers
Steve
