A male Red-crested Pochard at Hanningfield Reservoir nature reserve. I have earlier showed a picture of this fellow with his family. I think he has now spotted the phographer and is trying to tell his opinion about paparazzis.

From Birdguides:

Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina)

In: Red-crested Pochard Ca: Xibec Da: Rødhovedet And De: Kolbenente Es: Pato colorado Fi: punapäänarsku Fr: Nette rousse It: Fistione turco Nl: Krooneend No: Rødhodeand Pt: Pato-de-bico-vermelho Sv: Rödhuvad dykand US: Red-crested Pochard Ru: Красноносый нырок

The male is unmistakeable with his flamboyantly red head, white flanks and ridiculously pink bill. The female is subtler, browner in tone with pale cheeks and a dark cap recalling a female Common Scoter but with a longer, slimmer bill and longer, paler body. In flight, Red-crested Pochards of both sexes have a much more extensive white wingbar than any other European duck; all the secondaries and all the primaries look almost completely white in the field, making a stunning sight when seen in a large flock.

Breeds and winters on well-vegetated lowland lakes and river deltas.

The species migrates short distances, wintering in two main areas. Some birds move to the western Mediterranean, centering around Spain and the Camargue. Others move to the Black Sea, especially around the Danube Delta.

Hello Pekka
great capture for interesting looking male pochard. focus, timing, composition very nice. thanks for sharing. best wishes

I enjoyed reading your opening para, Pekka. It's hilarious :)!
This very colourful water bird does look a bit peeved; it is that red eye that says it.
A beautiful capture in its totality with sharp focus and rich colours. The circular waves go well with the subject.
Thanks and regards.

Hello Pekka,

Good and funny shot of this Pochard. This one seems not to be happy to see you. Good overall sharpness with a blurry head which allows to imagine its movement. Beautiful colours.

Hi Pekka
Great capture with nice natural color and good detail.

Hello Pekka,

You are showing a good photo of this bird. Sharpness is good so that even water drops from the plumage can be well seen. As you have used well the light colors are saturated and naturaly lookin.

Thank you for sharing,

hello Pekka

excellent shot of the Red-crested Pochard male,
i love his pose, and also love your humoristic
biggining of notes, excellent sharpness and details
of the duck, but i would prefer to give a little bit
more spaces behind and in-front of him, TFS

The subdued colours and facial expression make this one pretty neat to see,...I'll bet a beer it was even better in person although looks like a drudge day..Still these can be the day for such god images..

Hej Pekka,
A very amusing capture of this male swivelling around in the water! Excellent timing, good focus and fine details.
TFS and have a nice weekend! Ulla

Hi Pekka,

The capture of the water ripples is an asset to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the duck. The picture is clear and sharp. The light is enhancing the colors. have a nice day.
