Grey Seal, Halichoerus grypus, pup out on the sand bar at Donna Nook in Lincolnshire.

These guys get born looking like they have a loose fitting white coat on that is two sizes to big, but after about 3 weeks of suckling the rich fatty (60% fat) milk that the mother provides, and putting on about 2KG a day, they soon look like over stuffed barrels lying out on the beach. Having done her duty, the mother then mates again, leaving the pup to lie out on the beach moulting off their white baby fur. During this period of time they do not feed and live off their fat reserves, until they get their water proof adult coats and go to sea for the first time.

Donna Nook, on the East Coast of the UK in Lincolnshire has a large breeding colony of these seals, which every year in November and December come ashore to have their young and to mate again. Highly recommended to anyone who likes this sort of photography, and as one of the most easily accessible wild life spectacles in the UK.

Hello Miles,
nice tür,
perfect color.

Hi Miles,
this is an attractive photo taken in a very nice and soft light which works wonders for this pub.The pup looks very contented and lazy,it must be the life to laze about like that,eh.The colours are all well exposed a your pov shows that you must of been lying on your side to get this shot as it appears taken at eye level.I like this fine looking little? seal pup. Thanks for giving us this view. Bob

Hi Miles,
I guess this is one community where the obesity of youth isn't an issue.
These guys must need all that fat to weather the elements.
A great look at this pup in the wild.

What a lovely, clean little fellow. His white baby fur just glistens. It is a nice uncluttered composition. Well done.

Adorable pup Miles,
Love the warm cream colors - Great light, composition and a wonderful POV :)
