Another shot from my and Pekka's trip to Elmley Marsh back in June. This Redshank finally got a bit of peace from the Avocets and just stood for a while as if he was soaking up the evening sun :-)

I hope you like it!

Redshank - Tringa totanus

Family
Sandpipers and allies (Scolopacidae)

Overview
The redshank is a medium-sized wading bird. It has longish red legs and a long, straight bill. It is grey-brown above and whitish below. In flight, it shows very obvious white rear edges to the wings and a white 'V-shape' up its back. The greatest concentrations of breeding birds are in parts of Scotland and north-west England. In winter, as many as half of the birds in Britain may be from Iceland. The numbers breeding on farmland are declining, due to drainage of farmland. Overgrazing of coastal marshes is also removing breeding habitat and breeding birds are increasingly dependent on nature reserves.

Where to see them
The redshank is an abundant and widespread wading bird on coasts - look for it at RSPB coastal reserves. Inland, you can look for it at reserves where there is wet grassland for it breed and feed on, especially in the northern half of the UK.

When to see them
All year round

What they eat
Insects, earthworms, molluscs, crustaceans

Hi Joe,
I love all the different marsh birds.
Some of them, like this one, may have rather "plain" brown plumage, but their feathers create such wonderful patterns, which you have rendered in sharp details.
Love the light, the reflection, and the eye contact.
TFS. ; )

Hi Joe. I bet you had fun with that huge lens. It just shows the pulling power of something like this. You were able to get good detail and warm colours from the late sun. well done TFs.

Hallo Joe
This is a great photo. The mirror image of this bird is stunning. The still water makes it possible to see the colour and the details of the bird in fine detail as if with the real thing, and is quite impressive. I like the colourful and well detailed patterns on the plumage. A real striking presentation with good focus and details. Well framed and great focus.
Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

Hola Joe, casi un retrato de familia jeje. Buna luz y reflejos bien captados. En enfoque creo que se puede mejorar un poco, pero creo que hay que valorar más el conjunto.

Hi Joe

This is again a wonderful shot and presentation from you, mate!
The composition here - with this lovely Redshank and it's magnificent reflection - looks amazing, especially in this rather low and warm light you've taken it in.
The details are very nice (that huge lens helped you a lot in this matter), the exposure is well balanced and the colors are all charming, too.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

PS: i e-mailed you with some more possible participants on our TN meeting.

Perfect reflection, wonderful details, well composed. An interesting bird...love the speckled plumage.
