I took this on the Raptor-in-the-Forest Photoday with Miles Herbert back in June. If I remember correctly, this is a Peregrine Falcon cross Saker Falcon :-)

I hope you like it and Merry Christmas!

Latin name
Falco peregrinus

Falcons and allies (Falconidae)

The peregrine is a large and powerful falcon. It has long, broad, pointed wings and a relatively short tail. It is blue-grey above, with a blackish top of the head and an obvious black 'moustache' that contrasts with its white face. Its breast is finely spotted. It is swift and agile in flight, chasing prey. The strongholds of the breeding birds in the UK are the uplands of the north and west and rocky seacoasts. Peregrines have suffered illegal killing from gamekeepers and landowners, and been a target for egg collectors, but better legal protection and control of pesticides (which indirectly poisoned birds) have helped the population to recover considerably from a low in the 1960s. Some birds, particularly females and juveniles, move away from the uplands in autumn.

Where to see them
Found along rocky seacliffs and the uplands of the UK are both good places in the breeding season. East coast marshes where there are large gatherings of birds can be a good place in the winter. There are Aren't birds brilliant! events across the UK where you can watch the birds during the breeding season.

When to see them
All year round

What they eat
Medium-sized birds, such as wading birds, pigeons and small ducks.

Ciao Joe,

Hallo Joe
I cannot think of another word to describe what I see looking at this bird than "Striking" Take note: Striking with a capital S. I've said it many times and I do want to say it again, this is my kind of pose, and I like a lot. A bird looking straight at you or captured from the front. It just gives a total different perspective and feel to the image. The eye contact is great and the blink in the eye is an additional bonus to this already special image. Just to think, you have captured not only one blink but twice. Smoothness and detail of the plumage is displayed beautifully. Best wishes for you and your loved ones over this Christmas period.
Best regards.

Hello Joe
This is a super capture.
But to my eye you have missed your focus point which is the eyes..
This may well be how you intended to take the image ..The eyes can hold a lot of distracting reflections.
All the same and none the less..
I wish you a very Happy Christmas.
I tip my hat in a Santa Style to you Sir.
All the Best

I had a peregrine falcon on my house one day.The conditions were snowy and overcast so the photos are lousy, not like this beauty.
Excellent POV and DOF.
The colours are vibrant and well saturated.
Excellent detail and clarity.
The eye contact is wonderful.
Great job.

Hi Joe and Merry Christmas!

This is a wonderful close-up from you, my friend!
Falcons are my favorite bird so it's a jy to watch some excellent photos of them here.
You managed something amazing here - capturing that reflection from its eyes - and that gives the photo such a unique feel. Very original!

I hope you had a great Christmas together with your loved ones and i wish you only the best for the next year!

Cheers and TFS

Hi Joey,
powerfully gripping strictly frontal portrait of that Falcon. I like the well shaping light, the well saturated intense colours, the gradual fading into soft depth from the precisely focussed beak that makes the image look quite three-dimensional. Well written informative notes. Thank you!
With all my best wishes to you for a happy, joyous, exciting New Year!
