Here's a 1st winter Black-headed Gull.
There's so many of them down by the river at the moment that I just had to post a photo of one :-)

I hope you like it!

Black-headed Gull - Larus ridibundus

Family
Gulls (Laridae)

Overview
Not really a black-headed bird, more chocolate-brown - in fact, for much of the year, it has a white head. It is most definitely not a 'seagull' and is found commonly almost anywhere inland. Black-headed gulls are sociable, quarrelsome, noisy birds, usually seen in small groups or flocks, often gathering into larger parties where there is plenty of food, or when they are roosting.

Where to see them
The commonest inland gull, particularly in N England, Scotland and Wales. Large colonies along the south and east coasts of England.

When to see them
All year round.

What they eat
Worms, insects, fish and carrion.

Thanks for looking!

Hi Joe!

You are right to share this picture with us, it's nice and shows us fine details of the Gull. The colour of the blurred background help to highlight them. i also appreciate the short and instructive notes.

Kind regards

Markus

Excellent portrait of this pretty Gull, Joe.
There is a tender expression in the bird's eye which you have captured very well.
I too was at the river side these last two days and shot some water birds.
TFS and all the best.

Hello Joe,
What a lovely close portrait of a Black-headed Gull! I like its winter plumage, lovely and white! Excellent sharpness and afine contrasting background.
TFS and cheers, Ulla

An astonishingly fine portrait of a "laughing" gull Joe, what were you doing my friend, holding the bird in one hand while photographing with the other, or what? Beautifully reproduced details indeed!
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Joe.
This gull is widespread in our places and so attractive model for shooting. I also like to photograph it. Your portrait is very nice and delicate. Exposure and reproduction of the feathers and other cute details of the bird are refined. BG also is attractive and looks like canvas in first-class studio. My compliments.
Alexei.

Hi Joe,

I only get to see gulls when I travel :-( A wonderful up close and personal portrait with excellent colors and details. I love the magnificent eye. I'm not usually a fan of frames but this background and frame are perfect.

Hi Joe. Good close up of the Gull. As you say more brown the black. Good detail and light in the eye. The bird stands out well from the BG. well done TFS.

Great capture of this juvenile gull Joe.
I'm wondering if it is the same gull we have.
Our Black Headed Gull is quite large, and the head does look quite black.
They are very common along the shoreline here, but also frequent rubbish dumps and town centres too.
