Common Poppy
Papaver rhoeas

Usually classed as an agricultural weed, I think poppies are actually a photographers dream :)

The Common Poppy is also known as the Corn Poppy, Red Poppy, Flanders Poppy amongst other names.

It's an annual, which means it completes its entire lifecycle in one year - from germination to setting seed. The seeds lie dormant over winter, then new plants grow from them the following year.

The seeds are often used in baked goods, although you should be careful - some sensitive drugs tests might pick them up as opiates!

Poppies are often associated with war, probably simply because they flourish on recently disturbed land...

Wasn't quite sure about a location for this one, the field is between Ripley and Woking, and probably closer to Pyrford. I think of the area as Ripley though, so that's where it's uploaded!

Tech:
ISO100 converted with DPP
-1EV to prevent red channel clipping.

Crop + Curves + High Pass sharpening.

Like a painting, Adrian.
Excellent control of the reds, well exposed and composed. The Blurred red background is awesome. Beautiful work.

Mike

Wow, what great one, nice point of view with lovely lighting. Looks like that there are so many butterflies are moving. Really fantastic shot, well done.

Belle composition,félicitations pour les belles couleurs.

Merci pour l'envoie.

This is a really fun point of view, Adrian, creating such a nice composition and emphasizing the depth of field. I especially like the bokeh effect of the background and the backlit petals.

Hi Adrian. I'm jealous, I'd love a shot like this! It's absolutely fantastic. Your choice of DOF is spot on, isolating a foreground of sharp flowers against a blurred BG of flowers of the very same colour. It is a very beautiful, artistic, wonderful shot with great composition and colour. Adorable, TFS :)
BTW when you say -1EV does that mean underexposed by one stop, if so then how does that prevent red channel clipping? What were your curves settings? This is just in case I get the chance at a similar shot at any time. I want one! TFS :)

I love Poppies too. I have been looking out for a decent shot of them but nothing as good as this yet. Lovely POV and beautiful backlighting. The LP is great! Very good shot Adrian.

Beautiful colours and just enough detail in the shallow DOF to add interest.

Beautiful shot Adrian!
It looks stunning, has great colours, light and mood.
I love this shot.

Very striking photo. It's unusual because instead of a gradual blur into the background, there is just a defined foreground and background. Interesting note as well.

Very artistic image, Adrian! Contrast with fore and background is amazing; each part contributes to add power to the other. A concentrate of red color enlighten by a very well placed sun.

Hi Adrian,

This is just lovely! The composition is great, but it's the wonderful composition and POV that make this photo fantastic imo. It's like Mike writes: like a painting. Into my favs. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

It almost looks like a city-scape how, red and black towers looking over a fiery sea!

Poppies are a photographers dream, indeed, and as I learned last week also very difficult to capture. Great job you did here, to get the right exposure.

Cheers
Sam

I really like all the detail in the photo, as well as the vibrant colour. The buds add an extra shape/pattern to the effect which is very pretty, especially how it disappears into the distance in a sea of red. Spectacular. The note was also different, interesting and informative. Thanks

Hi Adrian, wonderful image truely breathtaking, details colour and boca are great.
Well done.
Dave.

Hi Adrian, lovely image with very effective use of colours enhanced by the depth of field. Clever cropping of the shape and the framing enhance the image. I would perhaps have used a slightly deeper DOF taken a little more detail on the flowers in the foreground while leaving the background the same. Regards, Rob

Hi Adrian,
I like this a lot, I've wanted to do something like this for a while as a print to hang on my wall, but I've never seen enough poppies in one place. If you don't mind me asking, where did you take this?
Great shot!
Cheers,
Adrian

Excellent shot Adrian, love the way the poppies are sharp against the blurred red background, Howw did you achieve this?

Hi Adrian,
What a beautiful photo with such good color and sharpness. I realy like the DOF and low POV. The light in this shot is just amazing.
