Mute Swan
Cygnus olor

This shot is a silhouette of a Mute Swan taken on the River Wey, just as the sun was setting behind it.

Of the seven swan species worldwide, the Mute Swan is the largest found in the UK.

Although they're a native species they've been domesticated here for several hundred years at least, although in recent years very few have been domesticated - the swans are still plentiful though thankfully!

Domesticated birds were marked by nicking the their beaks or webbed feet, and unmarked birds were Crown property - in other words property of the King or Queen of the time.

Tech:
ISO100, RAW converted with DPP.
WB: 6800K, Saturation +2, Tone +2.
Cropped and resized, then light USM and HighPass.

Adrian, what a beautiful and artistic scene. The golden tones and the dark silhouette and reflections of the swan on the water are magnificent. Just stunning. Thank you.

I love the horizontal lines, the colours of the sunset and the sihouette.

Looks like the swan is eating spaghetti ;)

Great photo.

A really lovely capture with the golden shimmer on the water. The silhouette is spot on with the beak pulling a bit of greens from the water. Lovely!

Hello Adrian

Spectacular colour. The effect of the ripples on the water with the colour and the reflection is awesome. Thanks.

I missed this. This is a delightful shot Adrian. Very warm and colours and a sillhouette of the swan is a very pleasing view.

Next time, shoot it on a lake!

The silhouette of this graceful swan is very nice, but the golden tones on the ripples of the water make this a superb shot Adrian. Very nicely done.

Unusual texture to the water, and the silhouette and shadow really work well. It looks quite abstract. Normally I'm not a fan of frames but in this case it seems well suited. Beautiful.

Adrian, this is a very beautiful shot. I love the silhouette the bird makes against that stunning sunset-lit river. It is very artistic both in composition and colour range and your exposure brings out the tones of the sunset very well. I also love the lines and shapes in the water. Brilliant capture :)
