Many thanks to Ivan for identifying what I first thought was female Common Blue

This is a male Brown Argus (Aricia agestis) feeding on wild marjoram. It can be tricky to catch members of the Blue family (Lycaenidae) with their wings open. If the day is warm they are generally either flying around or resting with their wings folded.

The larvae feed on rock rose (Helianthemum) and common stork's bill - there was certainly plenty of the former growing in the area. I have very fond memories of the day I took this image. It had been a little cloudy for a while, but when the summer sun burst through literally hundreds of butterflies and other insects woke up and began feeding on the downland flowers. It was a real dilemma where to point the camera first! ;p

Kind Regards

Vinny www.vincentblood.com

Hello Vinny,
A fine capture of this lycaenid butterfly sunning itself. The technical aspects are great and taken from a fine POV in a pleasing compostion with the marjoram flowers.
However I don't think this is icarus!
The straight abdomen with brush like tip suggests that this is a male and though a little blue light is reflected from the thorax there are practically no blue scales on the wings though there is a little bluish tinge.
I therefore think this is a male 2nd. gen Brown Argus, Aricia agestis,
Thanks and kind regards,
Ivan
