A very rare Bali Starling (Leucopsar rothschildi) photographed at Paignton Zoo, Devon.
Conditions: Indoors (Glass house), early afternoon, sunny. RAW mode, handheld.

General info, from arkive.org:

Description:
The Bali starling is one of the rarest birds in the world and relatively new to science being first described in 1912 by Walter Rothschild, from whom the bird gains its specific name. This medium-large starling is almost entirely white apart from black wing- and tail-tips and the striking, bare blue skin around the eye. The crest is long and drooping, the bill is yellow and the legs are a greyish blue.

Range:
Endemic to the island Bali in Indonesia and previously found throughout the northwest third of the island. A recent drastic decline has restricted the species to the Bali Barat National Park.

Habitat:
Inhabits monsoon forest and acacia savanna.

Conservation:
The Bali starling has been protected under Indonesian law since 1970 and the entire wild population occurs within the Bali Barat National Park. BirdLife International established the Bali Starling Project in 1983, with the cooperation of the Indonesian government and US and British zoos, in an attempt to save this species from extinction. Armed guards now protect the population within the park and captive-bred individuals have been released to bolster the wild population, which has reached as high as 55 individuals. The programme has been dogged with problems however, and in 1999 an armed gang stole almost all the 39 captive individuals in the park that were awaiting release into the wild; in the same year the wild population plummeted once again, this time to just 12 individuals. Despite ongoing conservation efforts the future of Bali's national bird is far from secure owing primarily to the demand for rare caged birds.

This is a great post. Both is quality of the photo and interesting find. I have never seen this starling. Sharpness comp everything comes neatly together. It's very good. My only nit is the shadows of the cage at the back?

Hi Andy,

Greatn shot my friend! You really took some amazing, crystal clear shots with that lens. What's wrong with it?? ;)Seriously; when it focuses, it's seems to be in top condition. Exposure is spot on and the details are clear. Pose of the bird is nice and composition is good. The catchlight is there and the colors are saturated. I can't see anything wrong (apart from the visible cage in the back) with this picture. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

A great image Andy, really sharp. She looks so soft. An incredible looking bird.
Others have pointed out the cage, but this isn't a problem for me.

Superbe présentation de cet oiseau que je ne connaisais pas. La netteté est parfaite et la lumière fait bien ressortire les contraste de couleurs.

Félicitations !
