[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This Juvenile Woodpecker was flying around my home with its mate making somewhat of a noise and generally looking for food.
The Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopus major) Is the larger and more common of the the two black and white woodpeckers here in the UK. The upper-parts are mainly black with white patches on the wings and the face,. Underparts whitish except for red on vent and under-tail. The male only has small red patch on the nape but this not always easy to see. The juvenile has a red cap. It has an undulating flight. In spring males drum loudly of a tree trunk to advertise territory, excavates a hole in the trunk for nesting and also uses it's bill to probe for insect larvae in dead and decaying wood. Sometimes visits gardens (Mine are like clockwork always the same time every day of the feeders) Prefers deciduous woodland and parks. Widespread and fairly common throughout mainland Britain.

Image has been cropped about 50%, levels adjust and a high pass filter set at 1.2 applied in CS5

Hello Bill,
Must admit this is a new one for me, it actually looks alot like our Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers. Nice sharp focus and vivid yet natural coloration. The touch of red on it's underside is very attractive. Very informative notes!!
