[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Barn Owl Tyto alba has one of the largest breeding ranges of any bird, but in the UK and in Europe suffered substantial declines throughout the 20th century, leading to the species being given the highest level of legal protection in UK law. However, in recent years the UK population has been doing well despite the conversion of many of the old farm buildings preferred as nest sites into housing. There is no doubt that this species has benefited from the purging of harmful pesticides from British agriculture, although birds still suffer secondary poisoning from permitted rodent poisons. The erection of tens of thousands of Barn Owl nest boxes has also helped by enabling the species to occupy areas where nesting sites are scarce, and this has contributed to the the rapid, and welcome, increase in the number of breeding pairs that has occurred since 1995.

Although mostly nocturnal, they often hunt by day in winter, when they have young to feed and, particularly, in areas where they are undisturbed.

This owl graced me with a fly-by after another long wait in bitterly cold conditions. The sun was settling to the horizon, and only a few minutes of useable light remained, but the warm shallow-angled lighting caught the bird nicely as it passed close by.

At a time of disruption and uncertainty in life, I find a few hours spent watching the daily drama of owls hunting brings some welcome moments of peace.

Hello Nigel,

Hope you are doing fine. I think you have come back after quite an hiatus. What a wonderful shot and what a wonderful note! Owls often remind me of Eric Hosking, he was an excellent nature photographer, a specialist of owls.
This is a wondrous shot my friend in the mellow light of the setting sun.The blurred background definitely hints at the winter landscape, the focus is sharp, the bird's posture enviable, its colours of softer tones pleasing.
Your note's literary merits can not missed by a student of English Literature like me especially the last paras and the last three lines.
Your presence is a blessing for you are a true naturalist and fine bird photographer whose notes have literary touch of the Romantics....thanks for sharing....take care....warm regards/Abid
