Moon jellyfish

[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
A Moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita L.), the Firth of Forth, Edinburgh, Scotland.
The Moon jellyfish, Aurelia aurita L., is translucent, usually about 25–40 cm (10–16 in) in diameter, and can be recognized by its four purple-blue, horseshoe-shaped gonads, easily seen through the top of the bell. This species is found along the eastern Atlantic coast of Northern Europe and the western Atlantic coast of North America. The tentacles of the moon jellyfish are poisonous for small marine animals but people are not affected by the toxin since it does not penetrate the skin. |
