[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hypholoma sublateritium or Brick Caps/Brick-red Hypholoma is a common fungus found in clusters on stumps of various deciduous and coniferous trees.

I found this clump growing at the base of an old Budleia bush up against the house. I couldn't resist taking a photo of them becuase they were so clean. They are growing in moss, along with Xylaria hypoxylon Pers ex Merat (or Candle-snuff Fungus) - they are the grey fingers/horns in the very background of the photo.

Some info - Brick Top is so-called because of the red-brown colour of the caps. It fruits on dead hardwood logs and stumps.
Caps are 2-10 cm across, smooth, moist to dry, broadly convex and sometimes knobbed, brick-red, paler near the edge. Gills are attached, close, narrow, white to grey, becoming purple-brown. Stalks are up to 10 cm tall by 12 mm broad, and whitish. Spore prints are purple-brown. Widespread and common, it fruits on dead hardwood. Edible but not recommended
because of possible misidentification.

The photo was taken resting the camera on the tripod lain down across the ground, using mirror lockup and timer release (still not found shutter release cable). The picture has been cropped very slightly, resized and USM'ed. Colours etc are as were.
