[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Another raid on the Archives uncovered this shy looking Scarlet Ibis.
This shot was from a visit to London Zoo in May this year.
The title is a weak link, but for those of you who remember the theme tune, I'm sure you're singing along right now!!!

Eudocimus ruber

Size Length 22 inches.

RANGE: Occurs in coastal regions of northern and eastern South America extending from Venezuela to eastern Brazil and Trinidad.

HABITAT: Coastal mangrove, swamps, marshy areas, mudflats, and estuaries.

DIET: Crabs, mollusks, small fishes, and invertebrates.

SENSES:Uses sense of touch more than sight in search of food.

FEET/LEGS: Pink in color.

BEAK: Slender, slightly curved for ease in locating food in water.

FEEDING BEHAVIOR: They probe into the deep mud in search for food.

SOCIAL UNIT:Highly social.

NESTING: Breeding colonies are nearly always among the great natural fortresses of the coastal mangrove swamps which are remote and difficult to approach. For unknown reasons, they vary the site of the breeding colony year by year which is unusual for colonial nesters.

EGGS/YOUNG: On a shallow nest of coarse sticks, from 4-40 feet above the high-water level, the female lays 2 or 3, dull olive-green or buff colored eggs which are streaked with brown. Both parents incubate and raise the young. When hatched, the young are nearly naked. After 23 days of incubation they leave the next and scramble among the mangrove vegetation using their bills and wings as well as feet in their ungainly but determined exploration. They will learn how to fly at four weeks. These young will get their scarlet plumage over a number of seasons.

Very stunning picture Alan!
Focus and exposure are perfect. Red bird contrast beautifully with the green foliage. The only change I would do, is to remove (clone out) the little white herb down the photo.
Otherwise excellent picture and TFS.

This bird was waiting and posing for you.
Did you have to pay the bird for this shooting session ?
Therefore there seems to be a halo created by the sharpened all around the bird and especially at the end of the beak. This could have been removed.
Despite this the picture is excellent with nice colors and the funny pose is a bonus.

Alan bonjour, superbe shot aux couleurs eclatantes et une texture de BG qui convient bien et donne l'impression que l'oiseau s'extirpe de cette botte d'herbe!! Il est toute fois dommage que la patte soit coupée. Overall, superb post. Congratulations Didier.

We get a lot of ibises in Australia, but the white ones. The colour in this scarlet ibis is stunning and vibrant. The pose is lovely and the detail is very nice. I also like the background with the grasses. They really push the focus onto the bird. Well captured!

Surely your not old enough to know who Captain Scarlet was!!! One of my favourite childhood shows, and I'm ancient (so my kids say).

Excellent shot on this Scarlet Ibis. I was hoping to get one in Florida, but only saw white ones. The color and detail in this is outstanding. Good composition and framing here. I love it!

Hello Alan, this is shot with some impact. The composition is excellent and the blades of the plant in the BG draws even more attention to the subject. I don't know what colour the plant was but to me it looks a little flat, I'd like to see more colour there I think that would only improve the impact. Very well done.
