[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is one from the archives, a Migrant Hawker found sunbathing on the reeds in my water barrel 'pond'. I was hoping it wasn't trying to lay eggs there because that barrel dries out too often but that hope is misplaced because it turns out that this is a male. Apparently the males are brown with blue markings and the females are brown with yellow markings.

The Migrant Hawker is a species of dragonfly I started encountering only a couple of years ago. I think it has beautiful colouring. It is probably most easily confused with the Common Hawker but distinguishing characteristics are as follows:
Common Hawker has narrow antihumeral stripes on the thorax (the bit between the head and 'tail') where Migrant has equally narrow but also truncated antihumeral stripes.
Common Hawker has narrow 'waisted' segment near the base of the abdomen (the 'tail' for want of a better word) whereas the Migrant Hawkers is relatively straight.
Migrant Hawker has a yellow triangle at the base of the abdomen which is absent from the Common Hawker.
The costa (the stripe along the top of the wings) is yellow in the Common Hawker and brown in the Migrant Hawker.

The Migrant Hawker can be seen during late summer and autumn. It started out as a rare migrant during the 1940's and gradually is extending its range from the South East of the UK outwards. They are known for sunbathing during the morning or after foraging, preferring sites low down, sheltered, facing the sun and having a clear escape path. My little barrel of reeds fulfills all these criteria :). When sunbathing they hang vertically to make the most of the sun's rays.

I hope you enjoy seeing it as much as I did :)

Photo Settings and PP
Hmmm, looks like I wasn't paying attention very well when I took this. 1/2500sec and 400ISO is not good for a resting subject! Oh well ;)
PP included the ususal levels, contrast and sharpening. Additional work included cloning out a couple of distracting bits of grass and a small crop to help with composition.

Pretty nice looking, Hollie. Good colours, sharpness and composition, altough that f/3.5 didn't help (you know, DOF).
I also put sometimes older photos and I know (now) that I've could been doing a better job at that time, but I still like some of them.

Regards, Petru

Hi Hollie,

I agree with Gert, ya ain't no Novice.
Your use of DOF was well thought out or luck ;) I like the body focus and having the wings oof. It's not about having ALL in focus, it's the artistic approach that counts.

Excellent capture and well done on the composition.

Mike

Hi Hollie,
I think the portrait framing on this is excellent! Exposure looks great. Nice saturated color and sharp detail. The shallow DOF is excellent for this shot, Well done!

Very nice picture of this hawker. Colors are excellent. Little pity that you can't see much of the wings.

Great sharpness of the subject and good DOF, POV as well. Great pic! TFS, Sheriff

It is a lovely shot, Holly. I like the compo and colors. Details are sharp. I do believe a smaller F-stop would have helped to get more of the details on the wing. Well done.

Hi Hollie, good shot. These chappies can be quite jumpy, not as easy as Southern Hawkers to get close to. Very well done on this composition. Good details too.
