Snake's Head Fritillary
Fritillaria meleagris

Although it's a familiar garden flower, you may not also realise that this wild form is native to England and much of Europe too - it used to be particularly common in unimproved water meadows. Unfortunately as with so many of our beautiful wildflowers the relentless nature of modern agriculture has taken its toll... This plant now only grows wild in significant numbers at two sites in the UK, this was taken at the North Meadow NNR site in Wiltshire.

In case you're wondering - this particular specimen is being lit from behind by the sun, which is just out of the top right of the frame. I chose the low angle because it helps us see inside the flower a little more, as well as providing a non-cluttered background to shoot against. The left hand side of the camera was literally against the ground taking this shot - as was my head ;)

There's an interesting article about them here: If you're interested

Artistic and elegant, the composition is about as good as it could get. Would a little more light reflected onto, or maybe into, the flower make it glow and bring the colours out more?

Very nice and original use of the bright sky and sun light! An opposite aproach from the same flower that I posted some time ago. Thanks, Ori

Hi Adrian,
Nicely composed, love the low angle, though lacking a little colour in the flower head it is still a very nice image.

This lovely Lily in the misty background is very nicely presented Adrian. I only wish I could find a shot of my Chocolate Lilies with so much charm and character. Well done and thank you for the link it was very interesting. Excellent work.

Hi Adrian, A lovely shot, I like your POV very much. I can just imagine the contortions you had to go through to get it though . Get an angle finder, it really helps. Having said that, it really is a beautiful composition, so well worth the effort. I love the shapes the stem and leaves make against that sky background, it's very artistic. Nicely done :)

Hi Adrian
I just love this shot. The backlight aided in bringing out the texture of the petals as well as to enrich the colours.
The composition/POV is great and the DOF is perfect with remarkable sharp details.
From your notes it sounds like you ate a bit of dirt for this shot.
Very well done and TFS.

Hi Adrian!

Beautifull shot you got for us. Sharpness and exposure are excellent, but best of all are composition and simplicity of your subject. The white BG and the shallow DOF are splendid. The low POV is perfect. The shot has a lot of visual impact.

Great close-up and TFS it with us

HI Adrian
This is a very lovely composition. Very eye-pleasing all around, thanks in part to your framing. Back lighting does wonderful things for flower shots.
Best regards

I like it.
Very artistic presentation with blank background and prominent subject.
well done!

Great shot

I like the composition a lot.. Simple and effective.
Your use of DOF and the rule of thirds makes this a very impressive shot.
