4 shots of the new African Lion cubs at whipsnade zoo...Playing, resting and eating!
These cubs are only about 2 months old but are pretty big already - they look about the size of a large domesticated cat.
I've been looking forward to getting up to see them ever since I heard the news that the first cubs for 30 years had been born at Whipsnade, it was just unfortunate that I picked a very busy day; not only was it fathers day so there were hundreds of families there, but there was also a coachload of camera enthusiasts on a field trip!
I'll make a point of getting back up there as soon as possible before these boys and girls get too big!
General info about the African Lion, courtsey of ZSL:
Animal facts
Unusual among big cats, lions are social and all females in a pride are related. Males are recognised by their large mane which makes them look powerful when fighting off intruding males. Males usually feed first, followed by females, then the cubs. Over 50 per cent of cubs do not survive beyond their first birthday, due to starvation or being killed by males that take over the pride.
Where they live
Africa, south of the Sahara
Habitat
Savannah, woodland
What they eat
Zebra, wildebeest, impala and the young of larger mammals such as buffalo
IUCN status
Vulnerable
Photo notes: Used Canon 1.4x extender (still too short!) handheld with lens hood pressed against glass. |

Hi Andy, nice presentation of these cute fellows. Nice lighting, colours and detail. Well done and TFS.
Dean.
Hi Andy,
You got some good shots from that distance. I was hoping someone would get into the enclosure with a strimmer to get the grass down a bit!!!!!
You've captured four good moments here. These cubs are going to be photographed so much over the coming months.
Well presented, thanks for posting.
Have a good week.
