Fratercula arctica
AKA: Atlantic puffin

An unmistakable bird with its black back and white underparts, and distinctive black head with large pale cheeks and a tall, flattened, brightly-coloured bill. Its comical appearance is heightened by its red and black eye-markings and bright orange legs. Used as a symbol for books and other items, this clown among seabirds is one of the world's favourite birds. With half of the UK population at only a few sites it is an Amber List species.

Where does it live?

They prefer offshore islands and high seacliffs, and breed colonially, with nests in burrows, under boulders or in cracks in cliffs where predators cannot easily reach them.

At sea

Where to see it

Best looked for at a breeding colony. Try the RSPB's Bempton Cliffs (N Yorks) and South Stack (Anglesey) reserves; the Farne Islands (Northumberland); the Isle of May (off the Fife coast); and the Shetland and Orkney Islands.

What does it eat?

Fish, especially sandeels

What does it sound like?

A growling laugh

When to see it

Adults arrive back at the breeding colony in March and April and leave again in mid-August. Some remain in the North Sea at winter, other move further south to the Bay of Biscay.

Welcome, Brett! Great subject. Well captured, too. I think the exposure is spot on, and leaves lots of detail in the white bits. I really love the blue background (of the sea?) My only suggestion would be a bit more of an off-center composition by a slightly different crop (trim a bit from the right and top), though I will admit, that's more a matter of taste. This is a solid piece of work, so I look forward to seeing more great work from you. And I hope you enjoy TN as much as I do.

Hello Brett
A warm welcome to Trek Nature.
Your photo is super! The colours are vivid with nice detail. The blue background really shows off the Puffin nicely. Well done and keep those photos coming. Janice

Hi Brett,
Welcome to TrekNature. A lovely shot of the Puffin, a great shot to open your gallery with. Nice detail and colours, excellent exposure and DOF. I might have cropped a little tighter, just to focus more on the face of the Puffin, just my opinion though. Great shot.

Hi Brett!
Top quality photo!

Salut Brett
This is a fabulous photo of one of my favourite birds. The details/focus are excellent and I just love the background. The simple frame compliments it well too.
Welcome to TN and thanks for good note!

Hello Brett,
This is a great start, well done!

I have never seen this kind of birds. Interesting face.

Hi Brett, funny little birds aren't they? Really like the picture, lovely blue background with great amount of detail in the feathers etc.

hello brett,
welcome to tn. i like puffins and this is a great portrait of one with nice colours and well-seen details. the note is quite explanatory and exposure is spot on. however, i agree with mbasil about trimming a bit from the right and seeing names/initials on photographs is not something i like. though i must confess this name/initial thing is only about my strict obsessions:)
thank you for sharing.
