At last a chance at my favourite subject a Dragonfly. this one a female Southern Hawker (Aeshna cyanea) for us a late season dragonfly this is my 1st sighting this summer. She was hunting around the far side of the nursery lake and resting every now and again on low vegitation, here it is the flower stalk of an old Dock plant(Rumex obtusifolius) and no doubt inspecting the lake at the same time. A prospective mate it turned out was only 30m along the bank. after she had flown off I walked back along the bank to see if I could find the Ruddy Darter I had seen when I found a male Southern hawker also resting in the grass by the lake. it didnt allow me to get as close as she did 35cm I had to make do with a couple of snaps from 1.5m away with the same lens so not quiet as good but a proof that he was there anyway, Click here to veiw an earlier image of a male Southern hawker taken with the trusty Sony when we only had Trekearth to post to, to see the colour differances between the 2 sexes.
Hope you like her, the BG is not quiet a clean as I would of liked because I was trying to get the wing ends reasonably in focus, but i think she stands out well enough in her own bright dress.
