Stanhopea greerii

As I was walking around inside the orchid house at the Royal Horticultural Society gardens at Wisley I happened to notice this unusual character.

At first I was drawn because it was an orchid species I was unfamiliar with, but as I looked at it more closely I was struck by just how much like an old man it looked - can you see the beard and moustache too? Reminds me of this shot over on TrekEarth ;)

The species itself is native to Peru, and was only discovered in the year 2000! It's astonishing to realise that we're still identifying new plants even now.

Genus Stanhopea was named after the President of the Medico-Botanical society between 1829-1837 - the 4th Earl of Stanhope, Philip Henry Stanhope who lived between 1781 and 1855.

The specific name comes from John Bernard (Barney) Greer. The author of a significant work on the species: The Astonishing Stanhopeas.

Hello Adrian

Excellent capture of this beautiful orchid. Once again this picture shows how strong a simple composition can be. The nice and warm colours and the simplisity takes the picture to a higher level. Excellent sharpness with lots of details. Perfect dof with focus all over the main subject. Wonderful job you did here.

I like it Adrian,
the light is good the point of view is very nice and the dof is great, the composition is a succes, well done.

Hi Adrian,

This is an expressive photo with interesting details and wonderful colors.
My compliments!

This is perfect. The details and exposure is 100% Every single orchid you posted so far has this very high standard. The old man's face I can see after you mentioned it but I think I still need a year or ten too see this for myself in nature. :)

Ps. I read last week that a new mammal species was found in Europe... a mouse of some sort. Amazing...
