Smew (Mergellus albellus)

Female Smews have a chestnut head with a white cheek patch, chin, and throat. The breast and flanks are dull grey and the upperparts are dark grey. The wings are dark grey with white wing patches. The bill, legs, and feet are similar to the males.

Breeding
Northern wet forests in Scandinavia with mature trees and nest-holes. Does use nestboxes.
Wintering
Inland lakes, reservoirs and gravel pits, shallow sheltered coastal waters and estuaries.

Hi Michael, good shot and a nice mate for the male you posted. The composition is good but I think it is a little oversharpened on the head to compensate for soft focus. I like the beak-open pose. Well done.

Very good shot Michael. We can feel the movement in it. i would have crop a bit on the top part and give more room at the bottom to include the entire reflection of the head in the water. More room on the left would also be better in my opinion. Thanks for sharing!

Interesing subject and a pleasing POV. The sharpening is a bit overdone on the head but not too distracting. Nice post.

Michael, the duck is cute, the bg is nice, as well as composition.
