On Monday 19 August 1745 a small rowing boat landed at the north end of Loch Shiel. It was early afternoon. Prince Charles Edward Stuart, "Bonnie Price Charlie" came ashore and met his escort of 50 MacDonalds before retiring to a nearby barn to await the response to letters he had sent to possible supporters all over the Highlands.

Another 150 MacDonalds were quickly on the scene, but for some time it seemed that Bonnie Prince Charlie was going to have to challenge for his father's right to the thrones of Scotland and England with just 200 men. Then pipes were heard approaching from the north. It was up to 1000 men of the Clan Cameron coming from Achnacarry and Loch Arkaig. Three hundred Macdonnells arrived late, having been delayed by a successful skirmish with Government troops near today's Spean Bridge.

More info on :

Today, a high monument stands at the spot where Charlie raised his standard so many years ago. The silent waters of Loch Shiel stretch out towards the sea, the high mountains of the Scottish Highlands looming on either side.

When it comes to the technical specs :

19mm, f/9, 1/30sec, 0.6 ND Grad HE

Very little post-processing (basically Levels & Curves adjustment), framing & final sharpening.

PS. The day I took this photo the midges (Scottish small biting insects) were extremely ferocious. My repellent-spray seemed to make the situation even worse :) The camera lens and filters were covered by large numbers of them. I had to use my rubber blower to get rid of them and have a clean shot. Another great use of this useful item :)

Hello Piotr,
Very striking photo, love the lighting and point of view in particular. Thanks also for the good note. TFS Rick

LOL You were following us! See the little boat on the right hand side? We went for a cruise up the Loch on that, and saw 3 Golden Eagles, several Red Deer and a pair of Sparrowhawks. This was also the setting they used for Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter films, though the school was digitally inserted into the landscape...

Absolutely beautiful place...

beautiful photo, what an amazing view...great pov you had looking down on this. great colors and contrasts.. TFS

Hello Piotr,
What an amazing landscape! The light is so beautiful... The colors and the reflections look great. Very good composition, details, focus, exposure handling and framing. TFS

Hello Piotr,
Such a picturesque shot of this beautiful Scottish landscape. The soft lighting really adds to the colour and atmosphere of your photo. The colours are spectacular as well as the composition.
TFS Janice

This is a gorgeous photo Piotr. I think I can see where you positioned the filter but the transition doesn't seem to extend all the way across the frame??? I often can't figure out how to position the GND so that I don't underexpose tops of trees or mountains etc.

Nine work. Thanks for sharing

Evelynn : )

Hi Piotr,
I add my share of praise. Congratulations!
Cheers, Dietrich

Hello Piotr, like Evelynn mentioned this is a gorgeous capture and the warm tones in the sky make this rather special. I took a photo of this scene from this very POV about 17 years ago with my Yashica slr. It brings back great memories for me as I climbed the tower and stood with "Bonnie Price Charlie" and starred across the lough. The weather was horrendous that day but its been a long time since Iv been to Scotland and I would like to make a second visit this year. Your gallery no doubt will give me a guided tour ;) I shall add this to my favorites. Very well done.

Wow, this is what I call a fantastic landscape! The depth in this picture is amazing and the sunlight on the hilltop in the left is just marvelous. Colors are perfect. Love this one.

Belle photo,l'endroit est joli et trčs agréable ŕ regarder. Superbe couleurs et belle lumičre.

Vous avez l'oeil.

Hi Piotr

Stunning scenery. The dramatic sky adds punch to this shot. Beautiful to view. Thank you!

Excellent use of the grad filter, great composition and the ligth on the tip of the hills on the left is marvellous. At first I wasn't sure if this was dawn or dusk. The yellowish colours in the sky suggest it was dawn but a little research about the orientation of the loch tells me that it's dusk :) If I had any nit it would be that it's a tiny bit over-sharpened.

Hi Piotr,
I know how you felt when taking this photo. I've been taking photos this summer covered with mosquitos. It really makes it tough to concentrate on making the photo. The blower was a great idea.
The scenery captured is really spectacular and they moment you've captured is just awesome. Such beautiful light and such rich colors. I need to remember this spot for my summer holiday.
Great informative note, but the information from Miles is great too.

Splendid work, Piotr

Being captured in Glenfinnan, this view made my mind go streight to "The Highlander"...my childhood favourite movie :)...so thanks for the reminder :)
The scene frm up here is more than impressive, with excellent details throughtout the entire frame, charming and well saturated colors, all making a magnificent composition.
I really like the way the coulds look, the way the mountains dive directly into the water and the way that monument lies in the middle of everything.
Terrific work!

Bravo and TFS

Great lighting and composure. Absolutely a favourite of mine!

Hello Piotr.

Excellent picture, nice composition and colors.

Jose Luis.

Great depth and drama! The light on the water draws you right in--perhaps the best three dimensional effect I've seen in a photograph.

Splendid picture and useful note.
When I first saw the thumbnail, it made me think to a painting.

I had the opportunity to visit this part of Scotland a few weeks ago and I must admit that Scotland is a kind of paradise for photographers. When the sky, the light and the land merge together, it’s often for a short time but it’s so impressive.

Cheers / Damien
