Stags and hinds live in separate herds for most of the year, each keeping to a well-defined territory. Deer in woodland live in small groups but Highland deer usually live in larger herds, moving up the hillsides by day to feed and shelter in the deeper heather or woods at night. Summer and winter territories are different. In winter the herds move to lower ground where there is more shelter, and in summer they keep to the higher slopes.

From about mid-September until the end of October, the 'rutting' season takes place, when the herds split up and the mature stags try to collect a harem of hinds together. A stag of about five years old is in his prime at the start of the rut, with fully developed antlers, a thick neck with a heavy mane and plenty of fat reserves.

I watched this pair for so long I filled a 2gb memory card. They were so absorbed in their tustle, I'm sure they had no idea or simply didn't care I was watching. They charged over the whole hill side and the noise from clashing antlers was quite disconcerting, I was certain one was about to receive a serious injury.
Eventually tired out, one gave in and simply wandered off.

Hello Gary,
Wow ! You caught a great moment. It is a pleasure to admire this natural photo.
In our forest I also hear their impressive noise but I couldn't take a picture, I am jalous ;-)
Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

Hi Gary,
Quite an image; not often seen. A fight, photographed so close!
Wish you could post the noise too...
Great image!

fascinating action. I wish I was there.
Crisp clear with yet a tiny blur motion on the legs which shows the movement: Brillant.
The natural dark background enhances the beauty of the 2 fighters.

Hi Gary
You did a great job showing off your two stags having a good fight. Excellent colours and detail. You've created a interesting mood with the darker background.
Nicely done.

Hi Gary

One of my favourite subjects. I have never managed to catch them fighting, they seem to settle disputes with bellowing and chasing in the herds near me. Great action shot. Great composition and nice POV

Hi Gary

Fantastic - just to have seen it, let alone have managed to get a shot! The colours are a bonus - the stags stand out so well against the dark green of the plantation.

Beautiful action shot, clear but with motion suggested by the slightly blurred leg. Colors are excellent. The POV is super, with the stags on the crest of that rise. Nice DOF, the distant background making a soft backdrop for the deer.
